Starting college soon, fashion advice?

So, I'm finally getting my life in order and heading to a medium sized college in the Southwest. I'll be gaming as much as possible while I'm there to make up for several years of my life completely wasted being a depressed shut-in. in a poor rural shithole. Background info on me, I'll be 23, I'm 6 feet tall with a full beard, thick rimmed glasses (polo brand, probably the most stylish thing on me but as soon as I have the cash I'm getting laser eye surgery).

My problem is this, I've never had any fashion sense, and my "wardrobe" is absolute shit. Old baggy tshirts, basketball shorts, jeans, and army surplus pants.

I want to completely redo my wardrobe before I get out there. I don't want anything too fancy, I just want to look sharp and have clothes that fit me well. Any advice as to where to shop, what outfits are good, stuff like that? I'm lost.

It's very difficult to suggest fashion just based on a description of you. It depends a lot on your features, body type, skin tone etc. It also depends on your personality. Way too many guys dress boring in college. The amount of black v-necks and black shirts and dark jeans I see on any given night when I go out is ridiculously high. As well as Abercrombie polos, ralph lauren etc. I personally like stuff by Jared Lang for dress shirts and polos. For jeans I like Rock and Republic. The difference in a pair of 250 dollar jeans and 50 dollar jeans is immense. I buy almost all my stuff online to get the best bang for my buck.

Chinos, raw denim, OCBDs, plain vnecks. Its getting cold so grab some sweaters and maybe a peacoat or m65 field jacket. The most important part is making sure everything fits correctly, look up how everything should fit. Then go buy the clothes that get close to it/fit well, and get them tailored. Shouldnt be too much cash to get them tailored as long as its not expensive material/drastic changes.

Cheap clothing stores
H&M
Banana Republic(good sweaters here)
J Crew makes nice stuff
Forever 21(yeah its a girls store, but has nice mens basics)
Uniqlo sells really good basics, but unless you live in San Francisco or NYC you can only order online
Target has a good line called Mossimo that makes nice basic vnecks/crewneck tees that are cheap

I'm definitely going to check out the masculine style guy. That's within my budget range. Thanks Samseu. And thanks everyone else for the suggestions.

I may get hammered for this, but I really like AE. Especially if you're on a budget. You can find some great deals on clearance at AE.com, too. J Crew is indeed nice, but if you have wide shoulders or a stocky build, forget about it. Rarely will I pay more than $150 for a pair of jeans, and that's from Lucky at the local mall. Vintage t-shirts and a well fitting polo shirt should be fine for the Southwest. It's not like you're going to USC or U of M. Most importantly wear what makes you feel as confident as possible. This sets the stage for you to focus on little more than running game and school. Good luck.

GQ it up as much as you can IMO, you want to stand out from all the kids who dress like bums. Of course after you graduate and get older you still want to stand out as a sharp dresser, but I think that's way easier to achieve in college. I'm not saying you have to wear a suit to class every day, but jumpers/cardigans with a shirt and tie underneath and jeans is a pretty good look IMO. Button up shirts that are slim fitting and accentuate your physique are great too.

I would also suggest that you invest in a couple fragrances. These can be expensive, so if you have to prioritize between those and nice pieces of clothing, go for the threads.

Great point on the fragrances. What were you going to recommend on that front, GQ? I'm thinking something like Le Male, Fuel For Life, or maybe a classic like Acqua di Gio? Assuming he wants something in the mass market that he doesn't have to look too hard to find. Lacoste Pure (White bottle) and Only The Brave (Diesel) are what I'm currently using.

I tried dressing chic in college for a time but the whole lumberjack look worked very well for me.

Raggedy jeans, black v-neck, flannel, and a beard will get you plenty of play in the local college bars. Never saw a big reason to change, so yeah.

Though if you want to dress up well in class to make a better impression on the teachers, that's something that I endorse completely. I had a friend who was a felon in his home state but he dressed up in suits to class every day. When he graduated he got some glowing letters of recommendation from his department that helped him land a job. While it's sort of out of my budget range to do this kind of thing every day (not sure how he paid for dry cleaning to be honest, as he was a chain smoker and usually unemployed), I recommend it because it tells the teachers that you're a serious bastard.

Before I start I should say that fragrances are a huge part of my game. Every woman wants a man that smells sexy, and fragrances can be used to open/game women. Every alpha should have a decent collection in my opinion.

Anyway, Le Male (this is a monster in terms of projection and longevity) and Aqua di Gio are nice fragrances. Not very offensive, most people like them a lot, and you can find them everywhere. Which is a problem, as pretty much all of my friends in HS/college had one of the two fragrances or both, and every girl that age knows the fragrance inside and out. I like wearing things that not many men wear.

For college kids I'll recommend the Le Male of Europe IMO, Paco Rabanne 1 Million. It's known in the US, but not nearly as many people own it as something like Le Male. It lasts a long time, it's very strong, and although I don't particularly care for the scent young girls absolutely love it.

Another thing is, you should match your attire to your fragrance. Fragrances like Dior Homme Intense, L'Instant de Guerlain Extreme, or Tonka Imperiale should be worn when you're GQ'd up, not when you're just chilling with a tshirt and some shorts.

Check out basenotes.com for info, brilliant site.

Where does something like, say, Yves Saint Laurent L'Homme fall for you? I own that as well and have received many compliments from the 21+ female crowd.

I love L'Homme, I own it too. That would be a great fragrance to use at work or going to class. I think I prefer La Nuit though as it's a bit sexier.

Tip for college kids on a budget, Midnight in Paris by van Cleef and Arples is very similar to Dior Homme Intense in my opinion, but it's a lot cheaper. You can get some great deals on that on amazon.

depends on your school/social niche. GQ it up is not great advice in my opinion. yes you want to stand out, but don't over do it - it will be clear that you're putting too much thought into it.

you might not like this answer, but real talk - stock up on polo shit. i'm talking pants/dress shirts/v necks. cute college girls love it for whatever reason. don't question it...

Those polos with the massive horses on them are absolute shit in my opinion, not to mention they don't fit that well.

Speaking of polos, I'll share a little tip with you guys. One look that I find works well is a wearing a polo underneath a v neck sweater. Button the top button of the polo as well. Doesn't really work with v necks that are too wide/deep though, has to be a tighter v.

Like this (I have that jumper lol):

Some of these suggestions I think won't work for me. I'm a broad shouldered guy and there's no way the "GQ" style will be congruent with my personality or look. Suited up is going to look fucking ridiculous at my school. I'm going to go for the lumberjack wear. The polo look might go well too. I want to look masculine and a bit "edgy". I'll be an older guy starting college so hopefully this gives me an advantage,

I don't see why you have to go for complex/expensive looks. I wear solid color t-shirts/Chino pants/nice fitting jeans every day. Along with this, I wear Jack Purcell shoes (they are essentially All-Stars with a preppy history), and a nice watch. All in all it seems to work out alright for me.

Personally, I think style is a lot about how you look physically and who you want to be, then creating a look that fits that.

yeah...buy rugby style/classic americana style clothes for everyday/class. Going GQ is kind of odd in college in a bad way.
Also jeans and V-necks and casual sneakers. get a few edgy looking necklaces or bracelets/rings. a few nice black polos with a cut that is appropriate for your body type. try to get some 7s or rock and republic type jeans (on sale don't pay full price for them).

For dressier-edgier stuff get some John Varvatos stuff...always looks good. cool rock and roll t-shirts, lots of darker colors and stuff. you can actually get all your clothes from there...its pricey though. but get ideas from there.

For cologne...get some Chanel Platinum. Its a classic good smelling fragrance that isn't played out. i need to get myself more of that stuff.... My college colognes were Issy Miyake, Chanel Platinum and Le Male....all pretty standard stuff...

J Crew and American Apparel are better in my opinion. Apparently Uniqlo in NYC has some great stuff.

IMO the most important thing is don't over do it on college. At least in my school the grls wear spandex and a hoodie like every day. So its really more game based. Don't get me wrong you want to stand out. But I think they're gonna smell you comin if you overdo it. Keep it simple. Nice jeans, sweaters, polos, strait leg khakis are makin a major comeback too I notice. Nice to change it up. I just got a pair of cuordoroys at the gap, don't know if that's your style but girls love them for some reason.
