Chia Seeds?

So do they make you take mad pisses?

Or mad dumps?

Or both?

Like flax seeds, they have a lot of fiber in them, so they will keep you regular too. But if you eat too many of them too fast and they expand in your stomach, you can get some pretty nasty cramps. If you stay below that 1/4 cup threshhold, you should be fine.

yea i take them a couple times a week. in mexico they are very cheap, probably 1/10th the price in GNC. alot of times for a meal or post workout i have a protein shake then a chia shake(chia seeds with water just wait 5 min to eat) they are far superior to flax seeds which involve much more work to consume and also oxidize quickly. chia seeds are very high in antioxidants, omega 3 and basically dont go bad. i started taking them when i read about the problems with fish oil.

Can you really buy Chia Seeds at around 1/10th the price of GNC in Mexico? Do you have evidence for this?

Here's a Chia Seed product sold on the GNC website:
http://www.gnc.com/product/index.jsp?productId=11095652

This is $14.99 for 12oz. Let's normalize this to 1lb, which means a retail price of $19.99.

Are you saying that you can buy Chia Seeds at around $2 a pound retail in Mexico?

The reason I'm asking this is because Chia Seeds are a HOT product. If you probe around, you can probably argue that it's among the top 10 food products sold online (Coconut Oil is probably tops). This equals business opportunity.

Even if you were exaggerating and say perhaps it costs $5 a pound retail in Mexico, this means that you can probably get this product significantly less wholesale (and even less if directly from the manufacturer).

Real good shit.

i have been doing a tablespoon in my morning smoothie for a week.

The label claims that just a tablespoon has a ton of Omega 3's. Sounds too good to be true. High quality fish oil costs about $32 per 16 oz liquid, or $2/ oz. Chia seeds are $0.33 an ounce, but you only need half an ounce a day per the label.

Did a little research, and yes Chia seeds for Omega 3's is a little too good to be true.

In fact, chia seeds contain more Omega-3s than salmon, gram for gram.

However… it’s important to keep in mind that the Omega-3s in them are mostly ALA (Alpha Linolenic Acid), which is not as beneficial as you may think.

ALA needs to converted into the “active” forms, EPA and DHA, before it can be used by the body.

Unfortunately, humans are inefficient at converting ALA into the active forms. Therefore, plant Omega-3s tend to be vastly inferior to animal sources like fish (21).

Studies have shown that chia seeds (especially if they are milled) can increase blood levels of ALA and EPA, but not DHA… which is a problem (20, 22)

Because they don’t supply any DHA (the most important Omega-3 fat), I think chia seeds are overrated as an Omega-3 source.

In order to get the DHA your body and brain desperately need… either eat fatty fish regularly, take fish oil, or take a DHA supplement if you are vegan or vegetarian.

Bottom Line: Chia seeds are very high in the Omega-3 fatty acid ALA. However, humans are not good at converting this into DHA, the most important Omega-3 fatty acid.

There seem to be a lot of other reasons to eat chia seeds besides Omega 3's, so I think I will continue to eat some daily - maybe use 2-3 tablespoons in the smoothie - but continue to get omega 3's elsewhere.
