Eating Cheap & Healthy on the Go - Ideas?

I'm loving some of the ideas dropped on the grocery thread, but what about cheap on the go?

One of my current biz projects has me running all over the place from town to town, often at a moment's notice and with no preparation. I often get stuck in one place longer than expected.

Tired of blowing money on restaurants and eating crap.

What are some cheap, healthy meal ideas I can grab on a moment's notice - I'm thinking like popping into Safeway and getting some fruit with something to accompany it that I don't have to cook.

Ideas?

There's a thread about this already from a few months ago - can't remember what to search for.

Snack wise: Fruits, dried fruits, mixed nuts (there's a Men's health mix one that's pretty good - unsalted), granola, Cliff bars, yogurt,...

Meal wise: A little harder. You can make a meal out of all of the above, or you can pre-prepare healthier stuff vs. buying fast food.

Anyone have a link on this?

Do Wendy's salads count as healthy (aside from the fried chicken one) if you don't spam the dressing?

I'm in a weekly hotel right now bout to finish up a job. Plenty of construction dudes here. The out-of-town contractor's meal of choice?

ROTISSERIE CHICKEN!

6-8 bucks during the day,
9 @ whole foods,
5 @ the end of the night.

Pretty much any grocery store worth it's salt has one of these in the deli area with a to go chicken area. (and if you're in a Latino area, look for Pollo A La Brasa, Pollo a a Carbon - much tastier equivalents)

Get some lettuce, grape tomatoes, and another veggie - 90 second chop + oil and vinegar, hot sauce for the chicken and you're eating good.

You can get at 3-4 meals out of one bird if you allocate it right.

Couple of birds, a head of lettuce, a carton of tomatoes, and you could eat well monday through friday on ~25 bucks.

Generally speaking I find that it's easy to eat (sort of healthy) on the go as long as you buy something small and forgo eating. Or just get a cranberry juice or something.

I have gotten into the habit of fasting and have tried eating no more than one meal a day. This meal is generally spaced over about two hours but I already feel a lot better mentally. Saves a lot of time having to prepare food.

Brown rice, grilled chicken and brocolli. Make enough for 3-4 portions and keep a couple in an insulated lunch box with one of those ice packs. Eat it cold, still tastes decent.

I love pho but I'm pretty sure it's not healthy, the amount of sodium, a lot of places use msg, the flavor comes from ladled on fat. It beats something likr pizza or fast food burgers but eat it every day and you'll bloat like mad and put on a nice fatty layer.

Hades I tired the same thing. Recently tried eating one large meal a day in order to save time. After a month I decided that eating a nutritious breakfast with enough protein and complex carbs was really important. While it did save time, it also increased my urge to eat fattier foods later in the day and decreased my athletic performance significantly.

Yeah, msg might be a problem, but I think a Pho made of quality ingredients is a rather healthy option. I mean, its all herbs, spices, ginger, beef and noodles. Im no nutritional scientist, though, so maybe your right.

Most adequate grocery stores now carry decent sushi. Give some a shot. Slice some vegetables with your pocket knife and dip them in hummus. I think the key is really being prepared so you don't have to eat unhealthy crap out of pure desperation. People on a lot of food blogs and throwing rolled oats in a mason jar with milk/almond milk/whatever and random ingredients (nuts, fruit, flax...) overnight in the fridge. Oats are great for your t-count!

Chick fillah has fruit and chicken salads alongside traditional salads. McDonalds has a LEGIT tasting southwest grilled chicken salad. And out here in so cal souplantation (aka sweet tomatoes in other states) offers a to-go option, although it takes at least 30 minutes to take down due to all the fiber. In my opinion, still more practical than juicing. As an aside, I've never seen a black person work at souplantation before...coincidence? LOL

I second the grilled/rotis chicken and grabbing raw veggies. No need to cook. Just wash/cut/chomp.
The only negative thing about the chicken is that they are usually pumped with a saline/salt solution - so just be sure to drinks lots of water.

You can always find pre grilled chicken breast in the super market as well as checkin out their deli selection.

Go european style, eat some cold cuts meats and cheese and veggies and bread and butter.

Fast food places? Try chipoltle. Salad bowl, meat, all 3 beans, all salsa, and salad on top.
