Colombian North Coast

I will be going to the Colombian north coast at the end of November for approximately 10 days. I have been to Cartagena before for a short trip so I don't need any info or advice. I am only staying in Cartagena for 2 nights before venturing off to Barranquilla and then Santa Marta.

From what I read here on the site I am not sure if the amount of time (10 days) I have for this trip will be sufficient to really get a good feel for Barranquilla or Santa Marta. I am guessing I would be better off just dropping Santa Marta all together. I love beach towns and even have a thing for chubby morenas, so Santa Marta might be my own little pussy paradise??

I guess what I am asking is would 3 days Cartagena, 3 days Barranquilla, 3 days Santa Marta be too much travel for such a short trip?

Also I might be staying in the "Las Mercedes" barrio of Barranquilla. Does anyone know if this a good spot to jump off of?

Any and all input is appreciated.

I didnt like Barranquillla but that is probably because I only stayed 3 days and didnt have a nice pad. I would pick one and maybe do a day or 2 trip to another city. For me Cartagena girls were the easiest (spent 2 weeks there), but I am sure Barranquilla girls are pretty easy too.

I did 3 days in Cartagena, 10 days in Barranquilla (during carnaval) and 4 days in Santa Marta. Overall I wasn't a big fan of the Caribbean coast, I prefer the interior, but if I was you, I'd skip Barranquilla and focus on Santa Marta and also check out Taganga and parque Tayrona. I found the Costena girls to be harder to get into bed than in other areas of Colombia, so staying in one place longer should increase your chances of getting laid.

I stayed at hotel Caribe in Santa Marta, around calle 17 and carrera 3, a couple of blocks from the beach. There's a good strip club just around the corner and on the weekends, the bar "la puerta" is pretty good, mixed crowd of travelers and locals.

Agree with Scotian - forget Barranquilla and spend more time in Santa Marta.

When people talk about Santa Marta, they're often thinking of El Rodadero beach. It's about 10 minutes out of Santa Marta. In Santa Marta town, you can get cheap hotel rooms. Beachside in Rodadero with a cheap furnished apartment is a nicer choice.

Best to keep it flexible. Definitely don't make commitments and pre-pay things in Barranquilla, cause you'll probably be over it after a day or two.

So you say skip Barranquilla for Santa Marta? I was actually thinking the opposite. Any reasons as to why?

I have travelled extensively in the DR and it is intriguing to me of the thought of a colombian/caribbean mix of culture. I did like Cartagena but as we all know it is a tourist destination. I am expecting Barranquilla to be that mix of what I am looking for. Plus I have pipelined on CC heavy and have some very good prospects lined up in BQN.

Where did you stay in BQN? I am negotiating an apartment in the Las Mercedes area for about $50 per night. Any thoughts?

Is there a beach in Santa Marta town? What is the vibe like? Also why Santa Marta over Barranquilla?

Colombian women are prettier ...simple as that. Now, bodywise Dominicanas are more naturtal and dont have as much plastic surgery. And they are in between Brazilian women and Dominicanas in terms of trying to hustle you. Very few Brasileiras have tried that with me, but some Colombian girls do....though not as much as Dominicanas.

Barranquilla has a couple of decent areas to party in, I stayed for a couple of days up at King George Suites, hotel is nice and about 80K/night, near centro comercial Buenavista (good for day game). Since it was during carnaval, they jacked up the prices so I left for hotel Marseille which is in centro (cl 44 con 43) it was cheap at 30K but a pretty sketchy area. Taxis were cheap all over the city. I forget the party areas but check the data sheets on here, I wrote one on carnaval and 20nation has an excellent sheet, he lived there for a few motnhs.

Barranquilla is big enough that you'll have fun there with the night life options and there's plenty of good looking women to chase around, but other than that, I don't think there's a hell of a lot to do around there.

That is why I recommended Santa Marta, although I don't want you think that I was all that pleased with that city either. If you mention Santa Marta to any Colombian person in say Bogota or Medellin, their eyes will light up and they'll go on about how nice it is there. Truth is that the beach is a bit of a dump; its small, the sand is grey, the water murky and best of all, there's a large container port right beside the beach where big cargo ships dock to unload containers. I've been to better beaches in Canada and my country isn't really known so much for its beaches.

The advantage Santa Marta has over Barranquilla is that its close to some really nice spots like Tayrona the place Tigre mentioned, Rodadero. You can do a lot of cool things around there like snorkeling, diving, hiking, etc. There's also a lot of back packers up there and some of the parties are pretty good, I went to one at a hostel and saw an Aussi guy put his entire face into a plate full of blow, he even had the shit in his eyebrows!

I didn't really get to know the area very well (didn't go to Tayrona, Taganga, Rodadero) because I partied so hard during the Carnaval, I lost motivation to do much there. I did manage to go bird watching in the Sierra Nevada mountains in a place called Minca, that was cool.

As for the chicas, overall I didn't have much luck on the coast, even during carnaval, I only managed to get one bang in my almost two weeks up there and that girl made me put in work. I had another one back at my hotel, in my bed but she wouldn't put out, I found the Costenas to be quite conservative. Also, compared to their counterparts in the interior, especially the Paisas, the girls on the coast aren't as attractive.

Nightlife and chasing women is all I am looking to do. The only reason I would go to Santa Marta is if the beach was worth it as I do like to waste a day soaking in the sun. But is sounds like that isn't the case.

Thanks for the input, looks like Cartagena and Barranquilla. I will let you know if I have more luck with getting the costenas to give it up. From what I have heard they are known for being more laid back and more prone to casual sex then paisas but I guess I'll know soon enough.

Did any of the hotels give you a hard time taking a girl back to the room?

My spanish skills are pretty good and I like the look of the costenas from what I have seen. I'm staying positive.

I loved Barranquilla, but it has it's pros and cons.

The women are usually morena, small, and very rarely do they have plastic surgery. These are all 3 things I'm very attracted to so it made me really like Quilla. Also your foreigner value is very high because not many tourists come to Barranquilla. However you need to know how to speak spanish at a decent level. Which it looks like you do. As my Spanish got better so did the frequency I got laid and with hotter girls. In terms of easiness I actually found costenas to be easy once you get them to your apartment. I had like 80% close once they got there, and among the locals costenas are known for being easy. However I didn't travel to as many other cities as people like Scotian, so he might know other girls a bit better.

The bad things about Quilla are the nightlife for one. It's not too bad but easily the worst of the 3 cities.

If it were me. I would spend 6 days in Quilla, 3 in Santa Marta. Santa Marta has Parque Tayrona next to it. This is the most beautiful place I have ever been. I would definitely suggest spending a day there. But in terms of scoring your type of girl. Quilla has it for sure. Just I had almost 0 success with night game while I was there. Although I am pretty shitty at night game. Goodluck man and enjoy

The foreigner who doesnt speak any spanish is seen as a sex tourist in Cartagena and Santa Marta......not so much in Barranquillla because so few tourists or foreigners go there.
Costenas are easier and more laid back than most regions of Colombia. As long as your spanish is decent you should do very well with them. Agree, with 20 nation completely, that as a foreigner with solid or fluent spanish, in any of thse 3 cities you should have no problem getting bangs
I stayed in hostels and cheap motels in these cities and my close rate was as good as when Ive lived in swanky pads in Medellin.

20 Nation,

I read a good portion of your posts about your time in Quilla and it was very helpful. I still haven't locked down a place to stay. Is there an affordable apart-hotel in a area with a lot of action? A good neighborhood for a home base? I am used to living in the New York metro area and would love to be in a bustling part of town. Bars, restaurants, parks?

I stayed in a month to month place across the street from Universidad Metropolitana which was really nice cause cute college girls were always just outside my door. I would suggest getting a hotel in the North East part of town. Over by Buenavista Mall. It's the safest part of town and the hottest and richest girls will be in that area. However. If you are not worried about being in a rougher area of town, and want easier girls. They may not be quite as hot as the rich girls, but the poorer girls in Colombia are still hot with some banging bodies, and quite a bit easier. I would suggest getting an apartment in central. Close to Central Commercial Portal Del Prado. In that area you can find a hotel for 10 bucks a night easy (although you will probably want to look for a nicer hotel, it will still be cheap). That is close to some Universities and some clubs that are full of hot latinas. The south is where it is really dangerous and where all the poor girls are. So they all come up from the south to go to that area. So if you want a little danger for an easier time. Spend your time in that area. If you want a bit prettier girls who are more rich and more difficult to hook up with, but it's safe in the area. Stay close to Buenavista.

Also in terms of finding the hottest girls day gaming. The best spot is Universidad Del Norte campus. It's the rich girls, but wow there are so many stunners walking around.

A mid-range hotel in the rough area in Centro it is. I can always make a day trip to see the rich, hot girls, but they are never my preference. I would rather fuck the diamond in the rough.

You think the hotel staff will give me any problems about bringing girls back to the room?

If they give you any problems, it's probably because they will want just a little extra for the extra person coming. They won't ask for much, but I never had any problems. I'm jealous man. I won't be going back there for another 8 months.

Colombian North Coast

I would do it like this: first weekend Cartagena 3 days....during the week to Santa Marta/Rodadero/ Tayrona...end with weekend in Quilla. I visited the north coast last year and colombian cities (like a lot cities in this world) are boring during the week. So party in the weekend and fill your week with activities like diving, swimming etc

Spanish in Quilla is very important! I met some locals who brought me to all kinds of parties...I had my pick every day.
