American boys appear to be maturing sexually at a younger age, a new study found.

Compared with studies going as far back as the 1930s, boys evaluated at well-child visits across the U.S. from 2005 to 2010 were growing pubic hair and achieving testicular enlargement 6 months to 2 years earlier, according to study author Marcia Herman-Giddens of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and colleagues.

There were some differences depending on race/ethnicity, with blacks entering puberty earlier than whites or Hispanics, the researchers reported online in Pediatrics. The study was published to coincide with the American Academy of Pediatrics' annual meeting in New Orleans.

A personal note on this: I didn't enter puberty until I was 15. I never kissed a girl until my senior prom -- Sherrie, a straight A student, who, to my amazement, started to french kiss me in the balcony of the hotel. Didn't know what hit me. Thanks to her, I knew exactly how to kiss from that point on. Here's to you babe wherever you are!!

And when I read this I recall how we ate when I was growing up -- we weren't poor but we always seemed to be at the financial edge. We ate meat at most twice a week.

Now kids eat hamburgers and hot dogs all the time. And guess what is in these processed meats. Hormones. And wastewater gets recycled and guess what? More hormones.

I am willing to bet that earlier puberty is a function of a somewhat fatty diet. Fats are needed for hormones to be produced. I would think that both dietary fats and bodily fats could work for the production of hormones, so this early puberty thing is probably obesity related.

I was also a late bloomer but ate meat pretty much every day. Always had sort of a paunch but was never all that fat.

although you are correct, there is a certain cut off point after x amount of test is produced from cholesterol.People have this idea in their head that if they eat tons of fat they will have higher test levels.Yes sat/unsat fats etc are needed, but its diminishing returns after 50grams or something.

Other than that,i actually think its chemicals in water/food that are making peoples sex hormones higher/out of proportion (My theory anyway lol).50 Years ago men didnt have as high estrogen as they do today. You could probably say the same about women and test, christ.

There's a clear fat-puberty link in girls, but have never heard of a similar link with boys. I know nothing about biology, but doesn't fat produce estrogen? Wouldn't it cause problems for boys for this reason? Most of the chemical pollutants said to cause earlier onset of puberty in girls are estrogenic.

This reminds me: make sure you don't use any body washes, soaps, moisturisers or any other products with parabens in them: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paraben - they're really bad news.
