StayFocusd: The RVF Addiction Killah!

RVF Public Service Announcement

Many of us have come clean about our addictions to the RVF. And, as I've said in the past, if there's a cure for this, I don't want it.

But what happens when your RVF Addiction starts getting in the way of your real social relationships (bangs), your job, your school work, or your fitness? I recently had a member desperately PM me, literally asking me to ban him, for a fixed amount of time, so that he can focus on his work. The other day, I looked down at my clock and realized I'd spent four straight hours on the forum. The rest of my apartment was dark, because the sun had set on my-ass. I looked in the mirror, and my eyes were bloodshot from not blinking enough--like I'd been playing video games.

This place is that good. It's the heroin of the Internet for real men.

Enter StayFocusd.

StayFocusd is a Chrome app that allows you to limit the amount of time you can spend on certain "blocked sites." You set the amount of time you're allowed to spend on certain domains per day, and that's all the time you get until it resets. You determine the reset time, the days the restrictions apply, the total time, and, of course, the sites that you're not allowed to visit.

Unfortunately, the current version only allows you to limit the aggregate amount of time you can spend on all blocked sites, but they claim the next version will allow you to allocate time for individual sites. I only have it set for two places: the RVF and OKCupid. (Hilariously enough, I use OKCupid to procrastinate from the RVF, which often yields material for the Hamster thread, in a vicious, endless cycle.)

In case of emergency, there's an override if you run out of time and want/need more. The override requires you to pass a test of your own choosing. In my case, this is for any moderating issues or juicy forum drama.

This doesn't mean you'll need to visit the forum fewer times, post less, or read less, (or should), it means just that you'll be a lot more deliberate about the time you do spend here. The thing I've noticed about this place is how I can idly click refresh for extended, indeterminate amounts of time. Needless to say, it works for any site on which you spent a bit more time than you probably should.

Even as I post this thread, I'm mindful of the ticking clock at the top (which stays hidden until you click on it). I need to have time leftover to check in later! Therein lies its power.

I have used this and it works. We must have the same addiction, because no joke, this forum is bro crack. It's a real problem for me. BUT BUT BUT. I also have internet explorer on my work PC. How do I block that? I need ALL browsers blocked.

I've got something similar for firefox, but my main problem is my phone. I'll get a text, check my phone then check the rvf. Next thing I know its hours later.

A girl fired this up at my house the other day. I wonder if she's going to try and read my 5000 posts to see what kind of a guy I am. She may need some time outs. This is all Roosh's fault. I followed his lead and had a nice clean browser for her and she said fuck that and closed it out and went chrome on me. RVF popped right up. I think the chrome icons need to be camo? possible?

Another thing I thought of...My only contribution to society is my posts here so if I get killed and my kid gets my computer she'll probably save my posts to show her kids one day? What's she going to tell them? Apparently your grandfather banged a lot of sluts?

And gave a lot of good advice on banging sluts^

And I like to think I'm being productive on here. Remember Marcus Aurelius's quote about happiness requiring and ordered mind? This forum helps order your mind in many ways.

What a coincidence, I just installed this extension a couple days back to limit my procrastination. However, I did NOT put RVF in the blocked sites list. Not just yet. I mean I've got to reap enough productivity benefits from staying off news sites, facebook, twitter, etc., so it's OK to come here from time to time, right? Right?

Yeah, your smart phone, your iPad, or other browsers are your worst enemy, but the mild feeling of anxiety about time that the app creates makes you be a little more disciplined. It isn't about cutting yourself off, it's about restoring your sense of time when you're on the Internet, because that's what's gotten thrown off.

I don't think this will work too well.

I remember when I lived in Cordoba for one month (the second time), and I had no internet. I thought, "I'm going to get A LOT done this month." What ended up happening was I watched a lot of TV even though I never watch TV. I watched Project Runway.

The procrastinator inside you finds ways to waste time. What you have to do is affect the demand side (your will) and not supply (limiting access).

This is truth. I recently deactivated my Facebook account for about a month as I was addicted. And did I get anymore done? No. I just fucked around more on other sites. Interestingly though I didn't miss Facebook all that much when gone. I realized that 99% of the shit on there is of no value to me. Just people chattering away about minutiae and trying to boast about how awesome their life is in front of a captive audience.

@everyone, what plugin is good for firefox? Is there a way to block sites on your Android phone? I'll even be checking RVF between sets at the gym. It's gotten that bad.

Same. I'm actually taking a shit right now and posting. The problem? I should be wiping instead of refreshing the forum every ten seconds.

While I agree with you in principle, I don't think you understand that this has gone far beyond procrastination. I'm a straight-up junkie. I would love nothing more that to go back to just being a procrastinator. The funny thing is: that would "only" mean a couple hours of RVF a day.

Right now, I'm this guy:

My addiction to the forum got so bad I used the 4HWW to outsource most of my posts to a firm in India. Now I have much more time on my hands.

I have two 24" monitors at work...one of them is a designated RVF monitor.

For the record: I went over my RVF limit time for today--even though I extended it twice--and am eating into my time for tomorrow as I type. [Image: lol.gif]

30 minutes of RVF a day keeps the bad grades away.

But, 30 minutes of RVF a day also keeps the pussy away. You need at least 60 minutes of your vitamins R, V, and F, to keep your game at its very tightest.

It's a difficult balance.
