What kind of phone for overseas?

Bump.

Anyone currently keeping up with the Android phone market? I'm in the market for a new one, and haven't been keeping up. Motorola is out of the question, as I had problems with an Atrix 2 and the Razr. Samsung is my preference. I just started looking, but would like any input you guys have.

The Galaxy S3 or the Motorola Droid M are both good options.

Have you looked into the google phones
Galaxy nexus http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-I9250-Gala...B005ZEF01A

I bought the Gnex when it came out and raved about it.
world unlocked for every band.
GSM/EDGE/GPRS (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)
3G (850, 900, 1700, 1900, 2100 MHz)
HSPA+ 21

mine has survived multiple drops at at least 5 feet (with the case on)
Its got a giant screen and a decent battery.

since if ones of googles flag phones..they take a big loss with the price.

when you step up to something like the galaxy s...you are paying 500+ dollars.

The Galaxy S2/3's just aren't durable enough. Performance wise they are amazing though. I'll look more into the Droid M. They may be more durable than the other models I had.

The nexus doesn't look bad. The price ($383) is in my range. The Galaxy Rugby Pro is a contender, although it has a 4" screen. I am getting spoiled on larger models.

Does anyone know if Nokia smartphones hold up like their old brick phones? Those were legendary back in the day.

Dont get the galaxy nexus, the battery is shit and the specs are meh right now. Instead go for the new google flagship phone, the nexus 4.
https://play.google.com/store/devices/de...16gb&hl=en
Its out of stock online but you could try some actual stores, my friend just got one for TMobile.

You said that samsung is your preference. I would either go with the Galaxy S3 which is a good phone, or the samsung note 2. The note 2 is an absolute beast with a 5.5 inch screen, quad core overclocked CPU and 2gb of RAM. One of, if not THE best phone out right now. Its fucking huge though.

You could always go HTC. The HTC One X is a good phone with an orgasmic screen, the specs are good. Only bad thing is battery is not very good and its not replaceable and no SD card slot.

If you want price vs performance, go Nexus 4. If you want top of the line, go Note 2. If you want somewhere inbetween, go One X.

Any advantages to taking an iphone 5 vs. an iphone 4 to FSU/Russia? I assume their networks aren't advanced enough for it to matter.

Status symbol?
Yeah, maybe of low status. That phone is four years old.

I second Galaxy's post. The Google Nexus 4 is the absolute deal right now, top line specs (Quadcare 1.5 Ghz Snapdragon S4, 2GB RAM, fantastic screen), unlocked, with 8gb for $299 and 16gb for $350. You'll have to wait 5-6 weeks for the 16gb version and the 8 gb version is sold out though. Also the Google Play store can only deliver the phone to a US address.

You posted the note..Damn near 700 dollar phone..which at its spec it's gonna burn through battery just as quick. and will be obsolete just as quick also.
I can't fathom paying that much for a phone just to try to keep up with the Jones'

I feel like the nexus 4 is pushing way to much into one thing to warrant the upgrade. I couldnt see myself using it as a heavy traveler (even the back of it has glass..to much room for breakage)
The simple fact that the delay is at a month+ is also to much.

The note 2's 3100mAH battery lasts for around 30 hours in one charge with heavy use, and the specs will definitely NOT be obsolete any time soon. It will still be kicking 2+ years from now. It is samsungs flagship phone for a reason.

I dont understand what you mean by that first part about the nexus 4, but yes there is concerns about the glass backing. But iphone 4 is the same way and many people on here use that.

The Galaxy Nexus 4 is LG. I never had any luck with their phones lasting very long. Not sure about HTC's quality either. Definitely going with Samsung. The SIII is out due to cost. Hmmmmm.

Let's take a new direction. The Nokia 920. Picked it up yesterday at ATT and it felt solid. The only other handset that felt good was the iphone 4. Samsung is trying to hard and making their shit too flimsy.

http://reviews.cnet.com/nokia-lumia-920/

I would consider getting into a two year contract. It's a Windows phone, but there is a way to Google sync:

http://support.google.com/a/users/bin/an...wer=138636

As for unlocking, this could be the biggest fail. I found this website, and could use some advice if it's a scam or not:

http://www.cellunlock.net/Unlock_AT_T_No...ttn920.htm

I'm not an app heavy user, so I think there is enough on the Windows phones to get me by.

Thoughts? I need to lock one down before the weekend, as I am fucking Jonesin' for a phone.

Don't be surprised if you find girls in their twenties with 350 €/ month wages who have iphones or blackberries. Don't ask me if it's from daddy, from work, if they have a sponsor or they sold their soul to the devil for it but the fact is many of the Ucranian girls I've met, specially those who can afford to travel abroad or go to fancy clubs, have them.

I agree an old crappy mobile phone can give a bad image of you but don't be sure a smart phone will grant you any special status. Just warning.

Just bumping this. Anyone using an unlocked iPhone 5 outside the US? Looking to acquire an iPhone for future traveling purposes.

To be more specific. Bought in the US and unlocked and operating outside the US.

Thanks.

I bought my iPhone 5 in the US and used it all over Europe for more than 2 years.

There are 2 models, one AT&T model (GSM) with the model number A1428 and one Sprint/Verizon model (CDMA) with the model number A1429. I had the AT&T phone and 4G didn't work in Europe but 3G was just fine. The Verizon phone is exactly the same as what European carriers sell (same model number) so everything including 4G works.

Assuming it's unlocked, you'll be fine. You can get it unlocked on Ebay for $5 if it's not

Edit: I should also add that the AT&T phone had wi-fi dropping issues and reception on Europe carriers with the Verizon phone was way better.
