Iran's Battle Against Women

This has to be the most male-dominated society on the planet...the exact opposite of the trends happening elsewhere in the world.

First, there was the recent decision to lower the marriage age for girls to 9 years old.

And just now...women are now being banned from over 70 university course offerings.

Along with the talk of impending war with Israel, I wonder how much longer this regime can survive. Must be a great place to be a man right now, however.

Puberty at 9 years old? I'm no doctor, or pedophile, but surely that isn't correct? I feel bad for those girls. That's slavery, not marriage.

From what I hear, the majority of the people in Iran dislike their regime and would to see their theocracy dismantled in order to create a more secular republic. From all of the Iranian-Americans I've talked to in the past few years(admittedly, few), most of them despise the regime and probably wouldn't even consider marrying that young. It's probably only the fringe radicals that would actually think to marry a young girl. It's unfortunate that many women won't be able to follow their own career paths though.

Muhammad had a 9-year-old wife. If it's in the Koran it must be ok.

I can't have sex with your personality, and I can't put my penis in your college degree, and I can't shove my fist in your childhood dreams, so why are you sharing all this information with me?

What is important is how frequently Iranians get laid and with this regime I doubt it happens often.

Nah, I'm more bothered with too much religious domination by a country

Exactly, what good is it all if you can't even approach a girl in the street without getting arrested by the Islamic police.

Yes, and this is exactly why we should always be careful when religious groups try to push their agenda on policies. You can't argue with the rationality of their laws, because their laws are set in stone.

The answer is temporary marriage...

news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/6714885.stm

From article:

" Shia Islam allows a man and woman to marry for a fixed period of time, ranging from an hour to a century.

A man can also have any number of temporary marriages - or sigheh, as they are known.

However, Iranian society still looks down on temporary marriage as a cover for prostitution.

Iran's interior minister, himself a cleric, said marriage was a human need and temporary marriage should not be used just for sex but to solve social problems."
