Bow Ties

Great style, love that photo. Great use of color and accessorizing, with a whimsical, effortless air.

Another thing about bowties is that it draws more attention to your face. I can't prove it, but whenever I see a photo of a man in a bow tie, my eyes are more drawn to his face. With a tie, your eyes 'zoom out' a bit more, taking in more of his appearance. We've all seen photos of people, whether of ourselves or others, where you look bad if the shot is zoomed in a lot, but good if it's more zoomed out. I think this is why people often characterize bowties as being 'in your face.' Unless you have a very attractive, proportional face, like the man pictured below, all else equal, bow ties may make you look uglier than a necktie would, just as the wrong sunglasses or hats could.

I'm not judging the bowtie in isolation, but in relation - "What would I wear if I didn't wear a bow tie, and how would it look in comparison?" Necktie, neckerchief, even an ascot, I find them to have a more a balanced appearance as well as better 'marketing.'

When you have a face like that, drawing more attention to it is not a bad idea.

Credit to Hencredible for finding the photos, of course.

That's a good point about bowties and the face. As the photos demonstrate, they look best on a man whose face is lean and has a narrower, oval shape. I don't think they look good at all on men with a wide face because they accentuate the width making him look sort of comical

Coincidentally, I have recently begun thinking about adding the bow tie to my arsenal. I want to dress sharper and more mature. On the one hand, I like the dress shirt (European, tucked in) with a slim leather jacked for a clean and rugged look. On the other hand, a dress shirt with a bow tie combined with a strong, masculine physique can be killing.

Young, baby faced guys: Adopt a rough, masculine style. Also, you can be a bit rougher.

Rugged looking beasts: Your clothes can be more refined, more fine details like a bow tie or a scarf.

A boy in 'pretty' clothing looks like a asexual kid. A bad boy in bad boy attire looks like a dumb fuck.

Remember, contrast is king.
