Best type / brand of fish oil?

Many of you must take fish oil. My question is, which brand do you prefer and why? What's the cheapest source for that brand?

I've taken various types my whole life. I don't mind the taste so I usually go for the liquid stuff and take it by the spoonful. Thinking of switching to fermented, cold filtered cod liver oil since it's supposed to be better than the more processed stuff. This looks good - http://www.greenpasture.org/public/Produ.../index.cfm

Is the premium worth it or is the basic non-fermented stuff equally good?

I don't take fish oil but I eat alot of wild fresh caught fish. Does this accomplish the same thing?

That's probably a lot better. Personally, I just go with a generic brand that specifies on the bottle that the main ingredient is legit fish oil... If you're taking straight cod liver oil, you're probably fine, and don't need to worry about the tablets.

More or less, but chances are you're not eating wild caught fish every day, right? I'm on the fish oil wagon, I only take 1000 mg a day, I know some guys take 2000 mg, I definitely think it has a positive effect. Supposed to be good for skin, hair, eyes, joints, and building muscle.

From what I hear some types of fish are higher in Omega-3's, the best being wild Alaskan salmon. Another concern with eating a lot of fish vs. fish oil, might be the amount of toxins and mercury in straight up eating fish. I won't even try to act like I'm an expert on this stuff, but I think it's worth it to take fish oil, I still eat a lot of fish probably 3-5 times a week, so I'm not too concerned with this mercury issue.

To answer the OP the brand I take is called "Natural Factors", omega-3 wild Alaskan Salmon oil 1000 mg, did a google search to provide a link, but my computer is running slow today and the page wouldn't download.

I think the amount of toxins in fish oil is regulated, whereas with wild fish you don't really know what the toxin levels are going to be. It's one of those things I decide to turn a blind eye to since I eat a lot of fish too - though mercury and other pollution in the oceans is pretty worrying.

Don't get me started.

There is no mercury risk to you whatsoever from eating fish, unless for some reason the factory that processes your fish actually dips it in mercury.

Actor Jeremy Piven got mercury poisoning after eating sushi something like 3 times a day for 20 years straight. That's extreme, and also there's traces of mercury in the fake grass they put in sushi bentos to keep the wasabi off the sushi.

I think he was a champion of the mercury warning labels they wanted to (and maybe they do now) put on fish in California. It's complete bullshit.

I've been seriously considering putting money behind some type of low budget study about this. It drives me crazy when people say this. I'm also dealing with the neighbor bitch who's kid has autism. She still claims it's from mercury. The autism kid got my little nephew thrown out of summer camp. This mercury-causes-autism charge is mainly related to vaccines, but is led by celebrity Jenny McCarthy who should shut the hell up. It's also bullshit.

OGNORCAL, eat fish, it's ok.

Aloha!

The fermented cod liver oil is supposed to be the best but it is really NASTY. I tried it once and threw it away - after spending $45 on a bottle of it. Supposedly the best non-fermented cod liver oil is the "Quantum" labs brand. They stopped making it so it is getting harder to find.

Krill seems to be the best, but it is very expensive. I stick with Carlsons cod liver. You get a boost of vitamin D also.

I am taking this personally. 3-6 caps per day.

Kordel’s Alaskan Salmon Oil is extracted from wild sockeye salmon, providing the cleanest uncontaminated pure salmon oil. Wild sockeye salmon also contains the highest amount of natural antaxanthin, a potent antioxidant that protects the body from free radicals. Each batch of product undergoes stringent testing for freshness and the presence of environmental contaminants including mercury, PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls), DDT (an organic pesticide) and dioxins.

I personally use:

I've noticed better sleep when taking Biotest's brand and it is slightly cheaper than Nordic Naturals.
http://www.nordicnaturals.com/consumers.php

  • I use to buy cheap stuff years ago, when I took 10 - 20 grams a day
  • Premium is worth it.
I've had noticeable results with fewer capsules

In my local supermarkets they sell the cheaper cuts of salmon, such as the bones with a little flesh, the fins, and some skin for a low price. If you cook the salmon bones in a pressure cooker they come out soft and chewy, like they get when they are canned. The cheap cuts are very oily, so you can also just fry them in a pan and drain off the oil, or use it to fry up some mushrooms. Salmon is a top predator fish, and so bound to be full of nasty industrial pollutants, but if you are going for fish oil anyway, you'll get a large volume of oil for your buck this way.

Krill and seal oil are also good.

I've been taking fish oil for about seven years now (on and off, as I cycle everything) and I almost always buy the vitamin Shoppe brand. There are a lot of debates about the quality of fish oil, but I've always been good with the VS brand. I just make sure the EPA+DHA=500MG or more per pill for the proper potency.

I don't think you can go wrong with a quality cod liver oil. Especially if you live or find yourself staying in a darker/colder climate.

The higher the EPA and DHA, the better.

I hardly ever eat fish (on average once a month), i want to compensate this by taking the fish oil supplement.

I am completely ignorant about this, can one of you please have a look on this ebay link and tell me if this is the right supplement to buy?

If not, can you please recommend me an ebay link with another fish supplement to buy?

Thanks

The fish oils are tested to limits your body can handle. I take 6 servings per day of Nature Made 1200mg-360mg Omega-3. It's about $5-6 at Target. This adds up to 2160 mg of EPA and 1440mg DHA per day. What matters more is the ratio of regular fats you eat. The closer you are to a balanced ratio of n-6:n-3 fatty acids the greater health benefit.

This means cutting out the excess bullshit. I get my other fats from Canola oil which has a gram of ALA which is not as beneficial as EPA/DHA for the brain/heart but contributes to the positive n-3 ratio. Other than milk and some butter I fry my eggs with I stay away from the rest as much as possible.

This equates to me buying about 3 bottles of this per month but science is just rolling in with new positive studies of n-3 fatty acids.

I started with fish oil last October and definitely feel a difference. I usually take six soft gels per day of this product: Carlson Labs, The Very Finest Fish Oil, 1000 mg, Orange, 240 Softgels

What I like about this product is the high DPA and EPA value.

Not sure about the brand in your link, but if in doubt you should just head to your local health food store(they usually know alot). A brand I found at mine is called Nordic Naturals and its pretty highly rated, with a nice lemon taste to boot. The Amazon and eBay link is below:

There are two main brands I use, mostly going off which one is on sale at the time.

This one is good, but the cheaper option:

This one is probably better, but a bit more expensive:

It's good for you but not what it could be. You could still supplement. Unless you are eating it for three meals a day your ratio could be better. The mercury in fish concentrates in parts other than fish oil, so eating whole fish will increase your mercury levels more than getting your omega-3s from fish oil concentrates. The omega-3s in concentrates are also standardized amounts which lets you dose precisely.

I know it's almost a 3 week old thread but I just wanted to confirm that this is the best Fish Oil I've used. It's the current brand I use and plan to stick with.

How long does it take for you to notice a difference? How do you take the gels? Just with water like a normal pill? Full or empty stomach? Give me some details lads!

I split it into two doses per day. I take my first dose when I eat breakfast with 4 eggs. The fatty acids in the fish oil combine with the choline in the eggs to make phospholipids like phosphatidylcholine that is utilized in the brain.

You shouldn't expect any difference for at least a month and perhaps longer for some. I generally feel more clearheaded and calm with less fucks to give.

This is hard to tell from your own standpoint but I feel like my memories are a bit more organized and easier to access-even things I learned before I was taking high doses of fish oil. Sort of like my mind is less cluttered.
