Cupid on Trial: A 4-month Online Dating Experiment Using 10 Fictional Singletons

I don't like online dating at all but there's so much talk about OKCupid here, that I was tempted to give it another shot. But the blogpost seems to suggest I shouldn't bother.

That message he uses... I don't buy it. Far to elaborate to the point of almost being creepy. I'm sure it's a good way to get replies. I am in the business of getting laid however and I don't really see this helping that.

The rest of the post is confirming what we all already knew.

1. Be female and good looking.
2. Be female.
3. Be male and good looking.

241. Be male.

There's a few problems in that study that wasn't mentioned at Roissy.

1. He doesn't say in which cities he put the various couples. If you notice, the second hottest girl has the most messages, not the first hottest. If the second hottest girl was in NYC but the first hottest was in Phenoix, it's obviously going to skew the numbers.

2. The ranking of male hotness is pretty debatable, it's not clear in my eyes at all that the guy ranked the #2 spot is less attractive than the guy in the #1 spot.

This shows that the two most attractive men to women in real life are equal to the frumps and chunks on okcupid.

In other words a female 8 is way out of a male 8's league simply because of a 2:1 gender ratio.

It seems to reflect reality quite well. I have talked with two pof dates, one a 5 an and other a 7, and they recall getting 10-20 messages per day on average. They choose whom to respond the message based on looks and the text.

Suffice to say, if you are an ugly guy, drop off from onlie dating, go to a gym and learn game as the numbers are simply not in your favor. Even the best message may be deleted since the profile pic is paramount to reduce the number of messages.

What I found most interesting about this study wasn't even pointed out.

For both men and women, it wasn't the most attractive ones that got the most messages. It was the second most attractive.

What does it mean? The competition is not as fierce if you right to the very top. More applicable in life than online, but still...

There is an unholy amount of thirst among OKCupid men.

Friend of mine who lists her body type as "a little extra" and has kids gets a hundred messages per day. She is attractive, and cool. I do not begrudge her the love. But a hundred motherfucking messages per day.

Here's a screen shot of her email inbox.

The second most attractive guy got more messages than the first for one simple reason: he looks more white. Simple as that. Switch around the skin tones and their roles would be reversed.

And for girls, I don't think it's so crazy that the second most attractive got messages either. Lots of beta men will see a 6 or 7 and think they have a chance. Also, trashy and ghetto guys will go for them thinking they can snag a quick lay, whereas the more attractive girls will be too difficult. The implication is that there's approach anxiety for guys with the hottest women *even online*!
