Moving to Rio next week...anyone around? advice

Sort of sporadically moving to Rio next week....just spent the past year and a half in Paris and Barcelona....from NYC but spend a lot of my time in South Beach....either way....always on the go...gonna hit Rio for the winter cause Manhattan sucks this time of year.....anyone in Rio???

Fortunately my friend who wants to come visit me sent me this website....been browsing through...great shit....

Anyone in Rio?? Or going to be?? Gonna grab a hostel in Ipanema for a week or so then try and find an apartment....maybe even do the roomate thing so i can get past this whole Brazilian thing....figure if i have some local friends i'll hopefully get access to all their girlfriends and then will make it a lot easier to meet new chicks etc. etc. especially since i'm planning on being there for a bit.

Any advice? Is this robbing thing really that bad?? I'm leaving all my watches and sunglasses here and hitting chinatown for some cheap replacements. Is that completely over reacting?? I know in NYC and especially South Beach it's all about what watch you have...your job...how much money you're spending that night....brand of clothes you have on etc. etc. hoping it's not the same down there....is it??

Are there a lot of tourists down there?? I was even thinking of getting a job at a bar or something....always a good way to meet chicks. Is that even possible considering i don't know a word of Portugese?? I work based on NY time....so i'm good till noon...the beaches ok in the morning at all?

Anyone know if i can get my blackberry connected down there???

Sorry for all the questions....just don't know anyone down there so not sure who else to ask....

If anyone's down there anytime hit me up....sure we can go out and do some damage...

Is this joke?

*The first thing you want to do is stop talking about your watches, designer stuff and black berry, as well as your urge to meet Americans ASAP while in a foreign country or you might just be better of staying in Miami or NYC.

*You should learn some basic portuguese, just out of common curteousy. Certainly if you want to work there.

*Why don't you just sell some of your fine ass watches and glasses? That should finance a nice trip.

I agree you Rocco.
And, I think that without speaking Portuguese you gonna hate Brazil and have a toursish time.

Deixa que essa fase é passageira, amanhã será melhor você vai ver a cidade inteira seu samba saber de cor!

All you really need is shorts, a tee shirt or a short sleeve button up and flip flops. Whenever I go to Rio I bring gifts for my family and that's pretty much it. Leave your jewelry, wallet, blackberry and better then you attitude in your home or hotel safe. You can get a cheap phone and phone cards pretty much everywhere. Also, I stay away from tourist spots, my wife and I might go to Copacabana once every couple of months, there are a few decent restaurants there. I live in Centro, Lapa is a bordering neighborhood, we go there a lot, also good restaurants there. You should at least learn some Portuguese before going to Brazil. I didn't know any but I worked with Americans who spoke Portuguese and Brazilians who spoke English, also my with speaks good English.
Good Luck and try to blend in

I am from Rio, but I'm not living there right now.

Go through the threads on Rio, there are many already.

If anything, pm me with other questions you might have.

Good luck and CHILL.
