Swimming

Been swimming a lot ever since I developed hernias and wait for surgery.

I think that a great workout is doing some HIIT -- here is what I have been doing, three days a week:

Day 1: 200-300m warm up. Then 5x50m on 5 minutes. All out sprints from the block. I do butterfly. It's rough -- I time myself and the other day I went 29s - 31s - 34s - 37s - 42s. Big decline at the end, I have that good early speed but need more sprint endurance. Then 200m cool down.

Day 2: same as above but freestyle. I have better endurance here and can get under 32 seconds for each one, first fast one is usually 27 seconds.

Day 3: 200m warm up, then 3x100 all out sprint Indivdual Medley, try to get under 1:15 for each. I am very slow at breast stroke so it's a bit of a struggle but I can get there usually. Do them on 7mins so I get about 5:45 rest. Then cool down.

Sort of a fun way to mix up a swimming workout, I find it excruciatingly boring to do a long 1000m plus steady state workout.

When the water is low enough, and its a warm day, swimming in the river is a good workout. If you put in an hour of hard work with hiking. plus you get a beautiful view, clean fresh water, meet people. Check the flow, season, and look for swimmers. Ask a ranger if your uncertain of your safety.

I have a question for swimmers.

I have never been good swimmer, but in 10 days, I will have to perform 300 meters (328 yards) in under 7 minutes. I have started to train 2-3 weeks ago. Since then, I am training almost every day.
I decided to pick breast stroke. My friend, who have been doing swimming competetions said my technique is okay. But I am too slow. I swim on 25 meters swimming pool, so my goal is to do one lenght in under 30 seconds. Usually I do a little bit over 30, and after 12 lenghts, my time is bad.
I have been studying some videos on Youtube and today I improved my time for single lenght on 27 seconds, but it´s still very difficult for me to "connect" it together. As I get tired, my technique becomes bad and it´s difficult to concentrate on right performing for me.

Otherwise I am in perfect shape, both by stamina (I have been practicing mainly running past 5 months) and strenght (my strong part).

Do you have any tips or links to useful material, that might improve performance?
I have 8 more trainings (=8 days), which is not very much, but considering normal training twice a week, it´s like two months.

Being not able to do that is not an option for me, too much depends on it. If my time won´t be okay, I am ready to perform "kamikaze crawl" at the end (that´s like when you break all the crawl rules and only use your strenght to move trough water).

What made you choose breaststroke? It is, after all, the slowest swimming style. Why not just do front crawl?

Swimming killed my asthma.

Before: Constant attacks since childhood. Used to miss school for a whole week (sometimes even longer). Up until highschool I'd still bring that little embarrassing device called "puff" or "inhaler" (just like BigBang Theory's Leonard).

Now: Zero. Nothing---even when my sight blackened due to workout fatigue. It's like I'm just a carrier for the gene, no longer showing any symptoms. Been 15+ years as far as I can recall.

It could be many other factors that contributed to the healing, but I don't recall any major changes to my diet or lifestyle---everything is more or less the same, until I went to a summer swimming lesson; practice was almost everyday I think. And after that, same diet/lifestyle... but I've notice I no longer getting these attacks every time I do something physically grueling. Hence my conclusion that it must be the swimming. That's just my story, results may vary.
