I think if you could choose one store to buy your clothes from, it would be J-Crew. They are killing it right now and its everywhere. just look at the online pics to get ideas, etc.

What would be your one-stop-shop for European based customers? Uniqlo maybe? Else?

Buy this book: http://www.amazon.com/Gentlemans-Guide-G...962&sr=8-2 its great. more classic styles, formal business, italian style, british style, but its a great foundation for now and the future. explains different patterns, etc.

I'm also eyeing with this book. Nomen est omen. 2016 version of the book is just out - in 8 days: http://www.amazon.com/Gentleman-Ultimate...3848008165

Check out Antonio Centeno's (who has been recommended in this thread, see the previous post just above) video review.

What to expect? The reviews say it's pretty dense. "No pain, no gain" could be the motto as I heard, which is fair. Buy digging myself through it, and implementing it's recommendations, will I become like and old style gentleman, suits only, not even nice jeans?

Also, how do you successfully merge these two aspects of clothing:
- dressing sharp
- dressing for travel, practical, light

Go back and watch old films (pre 1965), notice how Sean Connery's James Bond dresses; observe Cary Grant in North by Northwest; observe guys like David Niven, Errol Flynn, Clark Gable....think timeless.

One good guide is Gentleman: a Timeless Fashion by Bernhard Roetzel.

Pinterest can give you some ideas.

J. Crew catalogues are good, as are magazines such as GQ and Esquire.

The main thing is fit. Ill-fitting clothing, no matter how recognized the brand name, will look awful.

Avoid synthetic materials. They look hideous and are bad for your skin.

Rule #1: think timeless. What are some things that never go out of style?
Rule #2: Don't be dazzled by brand names to the point where you forget about fit, season, or timelessness. You won't impress anyone by wearing an Armani jacket that is two sizes too big and is clearly outdated.
Rule #3: Stick with cotton, wool, cashmere, silk, and other high-quality natural materials. Say no to polyester, rayon, nylon, acryllic, etc.
