Puerto Ricans can't elect Senators, Congressmen or Presidents, and Puerto Ricans themselves aren't all in favor of statehood. So he's offering his support on a matter that won't happen, in exchange for abandoning their traditional language. Great.

I've been following the media in PR today. They're having a lot of fun with this suggestion.

We are all fucked. Picking between Obama and these motherfuckers is like picking between getting shot in the hand or foot city of god style. Baby Boomers ruin everything.

Haha love the City of God reference. Top five movie for me. Yeah I'm in the same boat as you on blaming the Baby boomers. Shit won't change for a good while until the next generation is voted into office. These shitheads cant get their finger out their eye. I personally think a third party is needed. Not a far left or far right third party but one to bridge the two parties together. Get the moderate democrats and moderate republicans together to form their own faction. Alot of their colleagues dont consider them real demo/repubs anyway. I hate the fact Ron Paul is running under that shitty party. He's a straight independent. He's that crazy uncle everybody respects but nobody listens too.

Side note when I tell black people I didn't vote for Obama last go around they look at me like what the fuck is wrong with you haha. I didnt get my absentee ballot in time but I probably would have voted for McCain. Obama had me at the bring the troops home deal. Was he that fuckin naive or was he playing the people. I think it was the latter.

JayMillz that's interesting. I would have thought PR would be burning Santorum pictures. I've always heard PR really didnt care to be independent or a state but for him to suggest something like that?

The cycle of disrespect can start with just an appetizer.

Actually, picking Santorum is more like getting shot in the dick.

Does anyone else remember when Republicans were trying to reach out to Hispanic voters? What the hell happened to that strategy, was it the tea party thing?

Politics is an emotional game and they know it. That's why the two party system is so effective for grimey politicians who know how to work the system. Probably 99.9 percent of everything above small city/town councilmen. It sucks for the American people who do not lean far left or far right politically.

I simply try to avoid politics now. It's like being addicted to rage.

Despite the fact that Puerto Rico currently has two official languages, English and Spanish. Despite the fact that multiple languages are spoken in states like Louisiana, Maine, and New Mexico, you have the typical ethnocentric signals being used by the GOP. This kind of stuff is actually part of the GOP platform.

On another note, not sure how you would have considered voting for Mccain/Palin, but that was your prerogative as Bobby Brown would say.

Nah...that strategy was pre-tea party. Since Latino/Hispanics are the fastest growing minority group, they used the religion thing to appeal to them, since many are at least somewhat religious. There were signs that the message was being rejected, so I think they backed off of it a little...

The McCain of 2000? Definitely. If he had been the nominee, and had run against Gore, I would have had to seriously consider him. His own party cut his throat, because he couldn't be controlled. He veered from some of the party's talking points. Bush was essentially a blank slate. The Republican primaries of that election were some of the filthiest in recent memory in terms of some of the nonsense they put out about McCain. Now the McCain of '08 all of a sudden played ball because it was his last shot at being President. I lost all respect for him then - he wasn't the same man.

It proves how out of touch Santorum is. The vast majority of Puerto Ricans speak English to some degree (and a high one at that.) I was under the impression that most of them are content with the way things are right now (i.e. not a state, but part of the US.) He should of known these things.

Santorum says Puerto Rico should adopt English if it hopes to be state
By Felicia Sonmez, Washington Post, Election 2012 blog, Posted at 10:02 PM ET, 03/15/2012

Former senator Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) on Thursday drew criticism from several prominent Puerto Ricans after he stated that if the U.S. territory wants to become the 51st state, it must adopt English as its main language. Santorum’s comments, made Wednesday in English-language interviews with several local news outlets, led one of his supporters, Oreste Ramos, to request that his name be removed from Sunday’s ballot as a Santorum delegate in the territory’s Republican caucuses. Several other prominent officials on the island responded with anger at Santorum’s remarks.

I live in Maine, and the whole speaking French thing is patently false. Perhaps that might be true way up north (from the southern NH/ME border to the ME/Canada border in Aroostook Country is an 8 hour drive btw - thats how long it takes to get to DC from Boston, btw), but I personally have never met a Mainer who speaks French at home.

(AP) SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - Mitt Romney scored an overwhelming win Sunday in Puerto Rico's Republican presidential primary, trouncing chief rival Rick Santorum on the Caribbean island even as the two rivals looked ahead to more competitive contests this week in Illinois and Louisiana.

The victory in the U.S. territory was so convincing that Romney, the GOP front-runner, won all 20 delegates to the national convention at stake because he got more than 50 percent of the vote. That padded his comfortable lead over Santorum in the race to amass 1,144 delegates to clinch the nomination.
