Facebook spies on phone users' text messages, report says

Internet giant Facebook is accessing smartphone users' personal text messages, an investigation revealed Sunday.

Facebook admitted reading text messages belonging to smartphone users who downloaded the social-networking app and said that it was accessing the data as part of a trial to launch its own messaging service, The (London) Sunday Times reported.

Other well-known companies accessing smartphone users' personal data -- such as text messages -- include photo-sharing site Flickr, dating site Badoo and Yahoo Messenger, the paper said.

It claimed that some apps even allow companies to intercept phone calls -- while others, such as YouTube, are capable of remotely accessing and operating users' smartphone cameras to take photographs or videos at any time.

Security app My Remote Lock and the app Tennis Juggling Game were among smaller companies' apps that may intercept users' calls, the paper said.

Emma Draper, of the Privacy International campaign group, said, "Your personal information is a precious commodity, and companies will go to great lengths to get their hands on as much of it as possible."

How do you guys feel about Facebook?

I guess you should really be remember Roissy's Jumbotron test!

Briefly looked into secure communications a few days ago. If you want to speak somewhat securely and simply, use Skype. But not the smartphone version. There are superior methods I'm sure, but it'd probably require more time and investment to figure out. If anyone here is knowledgeable about such things, do share.

got bad news for yall...EVERYTHING (private emails, all your searches on google, youtube vids etc) you do online is documented, stored and easily accessible to 1st and 3rd party companies including skype (which is notorious for privacy infringement)

I bet you guys didnt know that every time you watch a youtube vid, your camera and microphone (if your computers have one) can activate without your knowledge. That means someone can watch you watching youtube and pick up and sounds where ever your computer is located.

not to mention geo tracking which all computers with a wifi signal have.

Nothing you do online is private, absolutely NOTHING.

Looking back at all of my fun and disappointing experiences with Myspace, I would say that it made me NOT want to sign up for any social networking anymore. This is another reason not to sign up for Facebook.

You want friends? Be friendly and talk to people...in person.

You want to meet and flirt with girls? Go out and talk to them, in person (I think there's a pattern here). Girls from far away lands? Choose from the following: plane, train, or bus.

You want to keep in touch with friends and family? Give them a phone call, write them an email, or snail mail if you want to keep it traditional. You have a vehicle? Visit them!

When I friend you or you friend me online...it doesn't necessarily mean we're friends.

Your pretty and silly pictures are only an external representation of you.

I don't give a shit about your musical, artistic, and literary tastes and hobbies unless I know you and care about you.

Same thing with your "status updates."

Even though the social networking craze made the world smaller and is an indication that we are social beings...call me crazy but I think it worsened human relations. It gave people more reason to hide behind their fears/insecurities and stay inside their homes, gave women more reason to attention whore, made people more "disconnected" with each other...and this is just a short list.

Nothing I hate more than nutjobs whom assume evreything is all roses and nobody is looking to exploit me for their own gains.

Why should I let corps and govt be able to track my evrey moves? Seize my assets? Detain me without trail? Or use my digital property for monetary gains?.

Financial Analyst Max Keiser always said Facebook should pay dividends to its 200 million+ users once it goes public. The irony is that our wasted time and content creates Facebooks value and we get nothing for it.

Another tidbit is that Apple ... Once you store any content withen its cloud service.. It owns it. Eventually the Cloud will replace hard-drive storage and thus Apple will control all of your intellectual/digital property.

Instead of calling us nutcases for being concerned about our freedom as it relates to technology, why don't you Bust Out a Data Sheet or two.

Bring some value here before you bring that weak sh*t to the hoop.

Or else you are going to end up in the cheap seats every time.

Ok, everything is documented that you do online, etc. Big corporations know a lot about us. Ok. So what? Why does it bother you? When do you think they will revel these to the public or in what way can this whole thing harm you?

Won't that be awesome if a significant amount of people demanded this?
But no, people don't care to know they just want to attention whore and e-flirt.

I'm a fan of Apple products and this concerns me. If they (or any tech company) wants your stuff to be 100% online, I'm gone.

No, I love to be a slave and love being monitored by someone else all the time...
You haven't answered my question, I'm curious about the answer to my question. What if you're being monitored? How and when will it harm you if it will?

Mofo, I think of it this way: if corporations exist to make money do you really want to trust them to keep and sell your info which could be possibly used against you? Or that they could do anything they want with it? Ever heard of the NDAA that was recently passed in Congress? It's not unfeasible that corporations will easily sell you out to people accusing you of terrorism (god forbid) or other crimes and then you can say goodbye to being able to defend yourself in court.

I'm using an extreme example now...on a "lighter" note:
-would you want your "dirty laundry" aired out in public and easily searchable? Remember, you gave the corporations your info and you have no say to how they're gonna use it.
-do you want ads constantly in your face?
-do you want people to know where you live, eat, travel, and bang at any given time?
-do you want to be banned from certain places because they have info about you?
-do you want a potential employer having access to and easily discriminate you from your previous text messages, internet searches, and who you have on your friends list?
-do you want your posts here on RVF to be easily connected to you?
-etc.

How about this as a dare, if you still don't care about the above:
Post your real name, address, phone number, date of birth, social security number, and a copy of all your government IDs here on the forum for everyone to see and never request to delete it. If you're still vocal about things after doing that, then you're a very brave man with a death wish.

Fair.

The fact that I'm asking a question does not mean that I have no clue about it. I know it sucks I just wanted to know other people's view on this subject.

I would have read the terms and conditions if they weren't 100 pages long

I'm glad i haven't shared photos or a lot of personal information about me but still feel like a sucker for signing up for facebook account anyways. I don't understand why Americans have to fuck the rest of the world and themselves just for some 10-15 (don't take the numbers seriously, just trying to make a point) jackasses to make more money.

I live in Europe and i see all people around me laughing at Americans but most of them don't know that their influence wraps the whole world.

The way I read what you wrote was antagonistic.

The "So what?" was a tip off for me.

It didn't seem like you were just asking people for information.

Was that not how you ment it?

And earlier in the thread, we had this skippy who has never posted anything of value on here say:

This shit is horrible. On the one hand, it makes me glad that I don't use Facebook. On the other, it concerns me about all the other places that shit is getting logged. For instance, Google logs all of your searches. If you happened to be logged into gmail or something in other tab while you're doing it, it gets associated with your identity. That means they know, potentially, every weird thing you've Googled--including "how to tear up a pussy in three minutes"--since 2005. These are strange times, my friends.

What sucks is when you google some shit about fat chicks to get some pics for the forum and then log in on Facebook and adds pop up for BBw's and shit. I clicked on a link for shoes that Mixx posted and now those Mark Nason boots are following me around all day long.
