Tell me if I'm an IDIOT for not going to Carnaval in Brazil

I ended up going to Carnaval in Bolivia. Long story short, I could not have pictured seeing so many ugly girls in short skirts dancing so badly in a parade. The girls actually looked better when they put their masks on (which usually were of some Devil like creature). I wish I was joking, but I'm not.

To make matters worse, there really aren't any block parties and it's much more conservative. People just throw water balloons at each other and spray each other with foam. No grabbing random chicks and sticking your tongue down her throat like in Brazil.

I wanted to go to Brazil for Carnaval originally but I told myself it would be over-rated especially since not many things in life can justify spending over $100 a night for a crappy dorm bed with a six night minimum, which is what hostels in Rio and Salvador were charging.

I also didn't want to pay for the expensive parade tickets in Rio, or the blanco parties in Salvador. Finally, I didn't want to deal with all the American guys going there with no idea about Brazilian culture who think they will fuck legit chicks left and right and in the process make Brazilian chicks pissed off at all foreign men.

So anyway, overall did I miss anything? Am I an IDIOT? Tell me that I'm a major IDIOT please.

I have gone out of my way to announce how ugly Bolivian women are, both in my book Dead Bat and also on my blog (most recently, the Bolivia effect).

No need to beat yourself up, just learn from your mistake. There is a reason why Bolivia is not discussed here.

I remember your warnings, but I was stupid and didn't heed them. I fully expected the average chick on the street to be ugly, but I thought that in a country of 10 million people they could find a few hundred hot chicks for an important national festival. Sadly, I was wrong. In Bolivia, they let cows march in the Carnaval parade.

Well, if it's of any consolation in the Carnaval of Rio there's also a lot of well disguised tranies.

You need to spend more time on logistics for Carnaval accommodation, but there are always solutions.

Find other travelers and share a furnished apartment, couchsurf, work personal contacts who live in that city, stay at a love motel, look in the classifieds for people renting rooms.

Rio and Salvador are the big two. Beyond those, there is fun to be had in Recife/Olinda, in the beach towns of RJ state like Cabo Frio, and all around the country.

Salvador's carnaval is more accessible because stuff is all happening in the one place. But you have to deal with rampant pickpockets, as well as the usual complications where the streets are a free for all.

You need some good connections to get the best out of Rio's carnaval. Knowing who to go with and hitting the right blocos at the right time. You might get the feeling that the real Carnaval vibe is going on somewhere else in the city and not where you chose to be.

Pre-carnaval weeks are a good time to be in Rio. Hit the samba school parties, the free rehearsals in Sambodromo. For the actual parade, there's a champions event on the Saturday, where the six top ranked schools parade. This is cheaper than the two competition nights, but it's the same performances in the same venue.

Carnaval is fun, but it's not exactly a fuckfest. As with all world-famous parties, there are a lot of hassles, unnecessary expenses and terrible logistics. It's worth going to as a tourist and general party-loving person... but for getting laid, it's not anything special.

Carnival is the worst time to get laid in Rio. You can kiss a lot of girls though.

I keep hearing that the carnavals in the smaller cities in the interior are a lot better for getting laid, specially in the smaller Minas, and SP states cities. Any of the Brasileiros in here can comment on those smaller cities carnaval? How about Joao Pessoa, hey ChocheM?
But the energy in the streets and above, for a samba lover, there's no better place in the world than Rio during the Carnaval. Yeah it won't be cheap but it's worth every single penny. I'm already looking at logisitics for next year's carnaval and even will contact my buddies there to parade with one of the big teams...that would be a one of a lifetime experience! Anyone in here has paraded in Rio with one of the big teams or thinking of doing it?

100% CONFIRMED. Carnaval is nothing but Urine streams going down the street, and FAT brasileiras running to the ocean to take a shit!

I personally find it disgusting to kiss a girl after she has druel from 20 other dudes on her lips...that's just flat-out nasty!

I did 13 Brazil trips total.....5 were Carnivals (4 Rio, 1 Salvador). Getting laid at the Rio Carnival is more geared to the method not part of this board. I had better success at the Salvador Carnival. Once you attend the Rio Carnival, you will find out that most "vets" you talk to will tell you to visit during non-Carnival times. Hit up North Rio and conduct your game like anywhere else. I would use the Copacabana area more for just being a tourist while expecting NOT TO get laid by game. My last 6 Brazil trips were during non-Carnival times.

The blocos here in Sao Paulo are pretty small and chill compared to Rio's Carnaval. Pulled a girl the other night and banged her. Was pretty easy.

I went to Salvador a few years ago and I have no idea how one would get laid there. It would take 30 minutes to walk 50 meters through the crowds. Even if you did find a girl, it'd take over an hour of fighting through crowds just to get back to your room.

I guess you were in La Paz for the carnaval.

My Data sheet on La Paz wasn't very flattering either :

I think the only place in Bolivia where carnaval can be worth while if you have NO other options is Santa Cruz, where lots of Brazilians study and the Bolivian girls are better looking.

My new book Famles - Fables and Fairytales for Men is out now on Amazon.

No, I was in Oruro about 4 hours from La Paz. That is where everyone goes in Bolivia for Carnaval, though there is also a pretty big one in Santa Cruz and also a smaller one in La Paz.

To be fair, I actually saw some somewhat okay girls in La Paz (by Bolivian standards), there are a lot of richer girls there but you have to look hard. Santa Cruz though takes the cake, it is actually pretty decent there for girls though the town can get quiet really quick at night. Sucre and Cochabamba are pretty bad for chicas.

I have no experience with Rio outside of Carnival, but I got plenty of attention at Lapa two nights ago. Last night my friend and I both fared well at Casa da matriz too.

I would agree though that the day stuff has horrible logistics for meeting girls, but it's a hell of a good time.

Yeah, Carnival in Brazil is overrated. I understand your trying to avoid it, but there was no need to go to Bolivia though.

$100 for a dorm. What!? No party is worth that.
If you want to get to nowhere follow the crowd...
Cape Verde is meant to be the ROCKIN' for Carnival. I'm sure it's more lucrative for poon than RIO during the festival.

Carnival in Brazil is a fuckfest in 3rd tier cities. Otherwise is just a touristy event with lots of gringos like Disney World.

Mr.GM, ...
how's Carnaval in Sampa? Where did you spend carnaval this year? where do you usually go? have you done Salvador during Carnaval? For next year, I want to try something in the North before flying back to Rio for the Rio samba parades, not sure which is the most fun...frevo in Recife/Olinda? Carnaboi in Manaus? Axe in Salvador? Have you done any of those? Which one would you recommend as the most fun?

Never been to the Salvador Carnival , but I would say that you should definetely check it out at least one time. Men here usually love the Olinda Carnival , it's less "mainstream" than the Salvador's , and you don't need to buy VIP passes to enjoy the best blocos.
Manaus I don't recommend it because most people there are damn ugly , and I don't think that the carnival tourists make up for it.

São Paulo is dead (despite some small blocos and the main parade) . I stayed here this year and just went to regular clubbing on carnival days. On the good side , I banged a very hot chick and got some numbers after kiss.

anyway, I would try Olinda or 3rd tier cities in Carnival.

I never been in Rio/Salvador bla bla bla... In MG and second tier cities in SP you can live the time of your life and don't spend tons of $$$.
Carnival outside the Anhembi in SP is pretty dead because our mayor is a nerd who never was invited to the parties and now wants to pay back. The burocracy to put a bloco in the street here is high.

Deixa que essa fase é passageira, amanhã será melhor você vai ver a cidade inteira seu samba saber de cor!

Thank you!
Do you remember when PSDB cut the consuption fee from the night clubs and how expensive became a night out since then?
Now, they are trying to approve a law to forbid people from drink in public places (ex: beach). So, even during a holiday I can't enjoy a caipirinha? come on!
Also, I am against the lack of options for people who don't own a car after midnight: expensive (and dangerous) cabs, staying up until the subway opens...
