Guys,
2012 Rio Carnival just begun. You can watch it live at: http://g1.globo.com/carnaval/2012/
The big favorite to win this year is São Clemente Samba School. These are the São Clemente passistas (dancers).

I find it funny and amusing how emphatic and obsessed Luvianka is with Brazilian "culture" (asses?) haha...

But yes, he should try to condense his posts within the same thread, as they are all very similar.

Tuth, give him a chance, will ya? I can't help having sympathy for someone who praises my own cultural background so much. [Image: lol.gif]

Luvanka, thanks for posting the link to the live feed. I'm a huge Carnaval junkie as I've been following it for the past 7 years without fail, watching all the Rio school parades, even staying till 7am. Attending the Rio Carnaval in 2009 was one of my dreams realized and it was one of the most memorable trips of my life so far. My next step is to actually parade with one of the top schools in the next 1-2 years.

Not sure what makes you feel that Sao Clemente are favorites to win the Rio parade. They are a fun school to watch, usually have catchy samba erendo and are one of the teams with the lowest budget. The title is going to be among the big teams like the usual suspects: Tijuca, Vila Isabel, Mangueira, Beija Flor, Grande Rio and this year Portela. Portela, being the team with the most win in the Rio Carnaval with 21 titles but have not won a title since 1983, but this year, they are back. I'm just watching their parade right now and it's a stunning one. Their samba enredo is considered by the experts as the best one and is very catchy. Check it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vis7RxBbR8U

Another school with a stunning samba enredo this year is Vila Isabel. They have a tradition of being not only one of top Rio schools but also one with the best sambas enredo as they have the great Martinho da Vila composing very beautiful sambas for the school in blue and white.

I'm very anxiously waiting to see the Tijuca parade this year as they have been absolutely head and shoulders from the rest of the competition the past 2 years. Last year, the fact that they didn't win it was one of the biggest scandals ever in the Rio Carnaval. Beija Flor won it and a lot of people and experts are saying they won due the mighty Globo's intervention and people have been referring to Beija Flor as Beija Globo. They are a fabulous school but these past 2-3 years, they were not the best as they were clearly beaten in 2009 by Salgueiro, in 2010 and 2011, they were schooled by Tijuca, but somehow, the judges voted for BF.

Mangueira is also coming back strongly and I"m anxious to wait to see their parade this year. They also have tremendous sambas enredo each year. Last year's was the kind that gives you the goosebump as per the beauty of the lyrics.

All in all, this year, i'ts going to be between Tijuca, Beija Flor, Vila Isabel, Mangueira, Grande Rio and Portela. Watch out also for Imperatriz as they are always a strong contender. Regarding Sao Clemente, their objective this year will be to remain in the Grupo Especial as their samba enredo is among the weakest and their budget is among the lowest so we'll see if they can remain in the Grupo Especial or get dropped to the Grupo de Accesso.

Just finished watching the Portela parade and it was a spectacular one. Fabulous samba enredo, very catchy, beautiful costumes, perfect harmony between the samba and the floats. All in all, they've been the best so far tonight. I'm very happy to see the Great Portela back, if not as a champion, at least as a strong contender.

Beija-Flor wins almost every year because the family that owns rede Globo supports them.

However, no one can say that they don't know how to put on a great show for the crowd.

Chicks need to be on rotation like a Netflix queue

Vacancier,
You are right: Carnival changes your life. What really fascinates me about Rio Carnival is the fact that it becomes a cathartic experience. A whole country joins in a community of emotion. There's a moment where everything is swapped by the enredos and samba dancing. I guess every school has a trading mark. Salgueiro has the most exciting music, Sâo Clemente has the best dancers, Portela has the best cars, etc. Beija Flor looks to me like a bunch of dabblers. They do have a very charismatic Rainha do Bateria, Raissa de Oliveira, and a wing of teenager passistas which looks pretty nice. Aside from that, I guess they are behind the other ones.

With God's help, I'll conquer this terrible affliction.

By way of deception, thou shalt game women.

Just finished watching the Sao Clemente parade and it was very beautiful, very catchy samba and it looks good for them to remain in the Grupo Special. Also watched today the Vila Isabel parade which was very late last night and I gotta to say, WOW. Amazing samba enredo, stunning floats, specially the comissao da frente (opening group). From the first night, they looked the best with Portela closely behind. Anxiously awaiting for the heavy weights tonight such as Salgueiro, Mangueira, Tijuca and Grande Rio. It's going to be sublime! Show de bola as they say in Brasil. If you can, don't miss it! You won't regret it.

Link to watch it live and for free, but will need very fast internet connection! http://g1.globo.com/rio-de-janeiro/carna...cobertura/

The results are in, Unidos da Tijuca are once again, champions. Fully and wholly deserving as they have been for the past 3 years head and shoulders above every school. Last year they got robbed by Beija Globo and finished 2nd, but this year, after a truly spectacular parade, are the champs once again. Salgueiro put on a magnificient show and finished 2nd, at only 2 tenth behind them. Sao Clemente barely avoided the drop...

I was saddened to see Mangueira only 7th after what I and many thought to be an unreal parade where they got the entire sambodromo on their feet and singing the entire 82 minutes. And how about their paradona for 2 and half minute without the bateria playing and the entire sambodromo singing their enredo? I was speechless and I can imagine it being super emotional for those in the sambodromo at the time. Stuffs that you will remember for the rest of your life. But you'd need to understand portuguese, samba and brasilian culture to understand the meaning and weight and symbolism of Mangueira.

Portela won the title of the best samba enredo of the year which was truly beautiful. Vila Isabel also put an a stunning parade with a wonderful samba enredo. Salgueiro put an absolutely screemer of a show finishing 2nd only 2 tenth behind the mighty Tijuca. Guys, there's nothing in the world which can come close, let alone match the Rio samba schools parade in terms of beauty, elegance, sophistication, and overall party atmosphere. I'm so in love that I am already planning on parading with one of the top schools next year. It's one of those things that you MUST experience in your life. No words can describe how an amazing experience it is. I wish I was there this year too...

If that doesn't move you and give you the goosebumps, then I don't know what will. This is the kind of stuff that will make even rocks melt. UNREAL! 200k+ people all singing the samba of the school from the top of their lungs, just unreal!

Vem festejar, na palma da mão,
Eu sou o samba, a voz do morro!
Não da pra conter tamanha emoção,
Cacique e Mangueira, num só coração

Anyone in here is as big of a samba lover as me? Anyone else in here follows the Rio samba parades as religiously as me?

For all those who have not experienced it, this is the Biggest Show and Greatest Party on Earth bar none. Full stop. Yes it's not cheap but well worth every single penny!

Hehe,

I'm -happily- back home! I lost the hang of the place, but geez, I like it a lot over here. I arrived yesterday, very out of tune, but very inspired with life overall... And I already went partying yesterday!

Apareça quando quiser meu caro, o Rio te espera! Me avise e aprontamos algumas pelo lugar.

Salut!

How does it feel to be back in Rio, to be able to enjoy life and the little things we take for granted until we go to the land of the free and brave LOL where everything is controlled and you can't do shit. I can't wait to return there! Btw, after having been for a while away, how do the girls in Rio compare to the ones in Hawaii in terms of looks and attitude? Would be interesting to see your feedback on that.
