My biggest lifestyle problem, by FAR: erratic sleep schedule

This is a problem that has plagued me for about 6-7 years now.

Every day, night, I try to get to sleep at a decent hour (say 11-12 o'clock), but I just can't pull it off. I end up staying up till 5, and sleeping in till 1.

This is a huge lifestyle issue for me, because it really messes with my ability to get a lot done. Does anyone have any decent resources on this?

Why don't you alter your lifestyle to fit your Circadian rhythm, instead of trying to accomplish the reverse?

I naturally fall asleep around 3 a.m. and wake up around 10 a.m. Have been like this for more than a decade. I didn't bitch about it (except during school), but rather adjusted to it: got a 2nd shift job, got to the bars just as they're starting to warm up, and still have time during the day to deal with official tasks like visiting the tax office, DMV, blah blah.

Funny you should mention this as I woke up 7pm yesterday and I'm still awake 8am today.

I usually manage to fix my sleep/wake cycle for a while by doing an all nighter, but then slip back into bad habits.

I'm interested to see what life hacks people suggest here for fixing this, although @MSW2007 gave a nice alternative.

Heres the results of some googleing

I'm currently working on the same problem, and while my current lifestyle doesn't demand that I wake up early, I'll be starting an early-riser job soon so I'm trying to train myself to have a normal sleep schedule soon.

There's two factors at play here: getting to sleep, and waking up. As far as getting to sleep, I've noticed that winding down with reading for an hour does wonders, and what always gets me to sleep within 5 minutes is visualization exercises. I just clear my mind and visualize stuff. I use fruit, but you could probably try whatever. I'll just try to visualize a banana floating in space, rotating around, until it's really vivid. Then I clear my mind and try an orange, etc.

What I haven't mastered yet is waking up. I'm going to try Steve Pavlina's technique, though, which seems really promising: http://www.stevepavlina.com/blog/2006/04...-goes-off/

Do you mind sharing the reasons why you always end up sleeping at 5?

I'm with Fret dancer. Break down your diet. Do you drink soda/coffee/tea? Even check for food allergies. Do you eat late? Do you eat crap like junk food? That shyt can fcuk with your energy patterns.

Some study shows that 12% of people are larks (early risers) and 12% are night owls. The rest can go eitehr way.

I'm like you. I like staying up late.

I get my 8-9 hours if I'm lucky.

I stay stay up until 1-2 a.m., up at 9-10:30, and at work at 10:30-11:30.

It works.

Take 2 melatonin pills(6mg total) at 9pm with a LARGE glass of water. You be drowsy as hell in 30 minutes. Set your alarm for 6am. You'll be up anyway because you'll have to piss. Force yourself in the shower. Get dressed. Eat breakfast. Get on with your day.

Tell yourself 20 times that you'll commit to this routine for 2 weeks.

This is how Psychologist Milton H Erickson cured someone of the same problem(minus the melatonin). Read it in one of his books. He made the guy promise him he'd follow his orders. It worked.

Set your alarm for the time you want to wake up and then put it at the opposite end of your room so you actually have to get out of bed when it goes off. Then either jump in the shower immediately, or do jumping jacks. Avoid taking a nap during the day. Do this for a few days in a row and it should get easier.

How do you guys who go clubbing on some days and have work/school on other days in a week manage? This means that your sleep/wake up time is inconsistent, and some days you'll be a zombie.[/code]

Avoid light, TV, and video games in the evening.

Pop 100mg of zinc an hour before bed.

Never tried melatonin but I've heard good things.

Personally, I never have trouble falling asleep when I'm exercising/training hard. Hit the gym or whatever around 7, eat a big protein/fat-heavy meal, and then read or do something quiet until 11. If I'm out with people, watching a movie or working though, I need an hour or so to slow down.

simplest way..
Get yourself a clock put it on the other side of the room.
Make sure its as far as possible, but still loud.
When you wake up you have to get out of bed to turn it off.
On top of that..make a plan to do something around that time. So you are less tempted to get back into bed.

I took the hard way. Military lifestyle forced my body to wake itself up on its own before 9am no matter what.
normally I wake up around 745-8 every morning. As long as I hit the sheets before 430am, Ill be up be up before 9.

Best part is...even after a night of drinking..im the first one up and hangoverless. plus it helps when I wanna dip from a girls house.
Either she won't wake up or she'll be to tired to complain at that early in the morning

Has anyone suggested the Ubberman sleep cycle? I started using it over the summer, because I was working weird times and still wanted to go out. It works really well, and you can adjust the times to better fit your schedule. http://www.kuro5hin.org/story/2002/4/15/103358/720

I'm sort of a stress junkie and I stay up stupid late, or not sleep at all at night. Though I always make it to class, I end up having a vampire nap in the afternoon. It's pretty cool.

If you live in a medical marijuana state just go see a doctor and say you have insomnia. 9 out of 10 doctors that advertise specifically marijuana will give you one regardless of your condition.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the most fool proof way to regulate your sleeping patterns yet .

Excersise . Namely : Cardio

Go to your local swimming pool and swim 40 laps in the afternoon . That should fix it .

Not to mention the other health benefits you'll get from it .

As someone who used to smoke weed regularly , I had a fucked up sleeping schedule ( would wake up at 5 pm every day ) , as soon as I started excersing it solved my sleeping problems and a lot of other problems too .

Its mine too. Mostly due to gaming. I have no trouble sleeping if I am on a regular schedule and not going out.

This was a good video I watched recently about sleep
