Is Steven Seagal really that good in fighting?

The way this guy fights in movies is impressive. I heard all sorts of shit from this guy, some said that he could really fight like a lion, others said that he is just an actor and the cameras do all the tricks.

I am just wondering if any of you know it. Is this guy really good in fighting or is he just an actor?

He's all washed up at 60, and is desperately trying to make money to defend all the sexual harassment lawsuits he has going on today. I liked him in his reality TV series as a Sheriff however.

Wiki mentions he is a 7th degree black belt in Aikido, and he married a female Aikido Master instructor in Japan, but I personally feel that Krav Maga or Pinjat Silat are better styles for street fighting.

I personally feel that his height is a big advantage, I think he stands at 6'7" in height.

Does he fight like a lion? I would say yes 20 years ago, he is now FAT and 60 years old.

Gene Lebell choked out Steven Segal on the set of one of his movies. There are a couple of different versions of the story floating around, but they all agree that he pissed or shit himself after being choked unconscious.

What does that mean, pissed or shit himself? Are you saying he was scared? Who in their right mind wouldn't be scared after being choked unconscious?

He pissed himself while he was unconscious. Judo Gene is a bad man.

That doesn't even reflect on toughness or his fighting skill. We have no control over what we do when unconscious..hence the term..unconscious [Image: icon_razz.gif]

Chuck Zito knocked out Van Damme at Scores in NYC.

I never said it did, I was just clarifying your question. Although, getting beat up and choked out does reflect his fighting skill. Judo Gene is legit though, so who knows how good or bad Segal is. I put zero weight in Aikido though.

He sure did! However, knocking out Segal might be tougher, as he is quite tall.

He didn't make all of those movies because of his great looks. Of course he's talented in martial arts. Would he win in a fight vs Tyson, zito,,,,take our pick. You try doing what he does and will see he's the real deal.

As for chuck zito being the tough guy,, I believe it. Just am disappointed not to see him use his talent in a UFC or n the movies.

Zito is in movies.

And yeah, he was president of The Hells Angles Nomad Chapter in NYC.

So yeah, he is tough. As hell.

Steven Seagal is legit in his fighting discipline. I don't believe he, or anyone else, ever claimed he was one of the greatest martial artists on the planet. He definitely let himself get sloppy physically over the years, but I definitely enjoyed his early films ("Above The Law," "Hard To Kill," Marked For Death,"Out For Justice," the "Under Siege" films. He's made a ton of straight to video films in Europe, and it was hilarious seeing him in "Machete."). It was cool seeing the progression in his first 4 movies. In "Above The Law" he only broke one limb, but with each film the budget grew so he progressively broke more arms and legs...HA HA!

Ahh Steven Seagal - his unforgettable performance in Under Siege. A cook who's also an expert in close combat, improvised explosives and special weapons and tactics.

It turns out he was busted down from bad-ass Navy Seal to a cook [Image: lol.gif]

I think Steven Seagal and Jean-Claude Van Damme both have their merits, but I think you're all forgetting probably the greatest warrior of all time...

He's been training for years and while he may not be the best fighter (as most traditional martial arts guys aren't) he is bound to know some useful techniques that someone like Silva could successfully employ.

When I was in L.A. training I went to Judo Jean's place when Karo Parysian (and Gokar)was still there. Jean was pretty old and still handled him like a baby.

I've heard a lot of stories from stuntmen that Seagal would intentionally hit them as if they were really fighting and have anyone that hit him "too hard" fired.

I don't know whether that's true or not. He always came off as a pompous douche in interviews to me though. He could probably bully most non trained guys though.

Seagal is better than Chuck Norris. Both Seagal and Chuck Zito can beat up Chuck Norris any day.

Actually not true, Norris was one of the first famous American Martial artists to start training BJJ

Chuck Zito was Mickey Rourke's trainer, he is one of the toughest men alive, so I couldn't possibly think how Norris can beat Zito in a street fight. As for Seagal v Norris, do you honestly expect a 5'9 martial artist to beat a 6'5 martial artist? Chuck Norris is no Bruce Lee.

Chuck Norris is one of only 3 Westerners in the documented history of Tae Kwon Do to be given the rank of 8th Degree Black Belt Grand Master. He actually created his own martial art style, and amalgam of all the diferent styles he had learned and founded his own school. He's held professional Karate champion titles. Norris was, and IS the real deal.

Well I've always found in wrestling and BJJ that technique trumps size/power.

A nice double leg to either of those guys would render their specialties useless in my opinion. I guess it depends on the true caliber of Norris's grappling.

He did a big exhibition with Rickson Gracie like 10 years ago (it's on youtube someplace) and his skill level looked at least like he knew what he was doing (or what he was supposed to be doing).
