Up until the end of my sophomore year in college (read: last year), I played college football at a division one school. Yes it is. Weight gain is a core component of any D1 strength program-coaches are always trying to bulk you up as much as they possibly can. They'll even modify your diet for the purpose (many linemen and linebackers are on special high-carb 4-5000+ calorie diets, and I was once on something similar to this). NFL programs are just more intense.

I'm overweight too, but that justification can only go so far. One can be overweight and still have fairly low body fat (see: most NFL and major college football players).

However, to reach that level of morbid obesity (we're talking above the 99th percentile here, even in the USA) is simply not possible for a woman (who, lacking testosterone, cannot build mountains of muscle as a male athlete can) without a truckload of blubber.

The BMI is inaccurate to a degree (especially when it comes to drawing a line between the just overweight and the "healthy"), but it isn't that inaccurate. A woman can't get a measure that high without a ton of body fat. Maybe she kept it all in place better than others (hence your attraction), but it still had to be there.
