New Carry On - Aliblahba - 09-18-2011

Alright gents. I've looked hard and can't find a new carry on. Up to this point I've been using this:

[attachment=3136]

It's a great laptop bag and is functional, but I am looking for a step up. I want something leather or canvas. Something old school classy that looks good in a suit or peacoat. I am hoping too for a bag that would double as a conversation starter. I sport a $600 Coach laptop bag, but it's only good for short trips. Any ideas?

I'm back to this hunt. It's a hard decision between a messenger bag and a backpack. Mostly I carry electronics/chargers, and important documents. The internal layout is important, so I can reach in and grab shit without fumbling through. This is crucial for security checkpoints. Here's a few that I'm eyeing:

The waxed canvas is old school. I like the layout for the laptop and phone and other accessories.

This one caught my eye as well:

This would fit the vagabond rockstar weekend trip, when I am dressed down for travel. Definitely unique.

Now for the big one. This is a hybrid, and leather, with some serious old school appeal.

It looks kinda fat in the pics but is only 9" deep. I want something streamlined, so it shouldn't be bad, and can strap it to my back if I gotta "shit and git".

What do you guys think?

I have this bag in tan, people have commented on it at airports and looks better as it ages. Filson has been pretty popular the last few years and they look fine with a suit or casually.

Interior storage is pretty bare, just some dividers, you'll need some little pouches, etc which I am fine with. They have a larger (258) and smaller (256) too.

Apolis makes a version of the smaller one in indigo that has a philantrophic story behind it but is double the price.

I've had the hots for one of these, but haven't pulled the trigger yet:

Messenger bags look more sophisticated but are a bitch to carry if they're heavy since its all on one shoulder.

Are you going for style or comfort?

New Carry On - el mechanico - 04-13-2012

Spirit air will only let you carry on a bag big enough to fit a laptop in. I think that fancy luggage is not worth the style upgrade if it's nice enough for someone to want to steal it just cause they want your bag. I worked for the Airlines a long time ago and have seen this play out many times.

as far as minimalist backpacks, I want a http://www.goruck.com I believe the Radio Ruck is within Spirit Airlines personal carry.

Minimalist..with a price tag I can't budget for just yet.
I use to have a backpack like the swissgear one..but i accidentally set it on fire.

Now I just use my german army rucksack 65L. can fit a decent week worth of stuff if done right..and still fits in airline bins as a carry on.

Ive been looking into something else. (you dont always wanna be carrying military gear)
But if it aint broke...why fix it..

*plus. I kinda get the badass factor going when I take off running somewhere

I think if you buy that leather one gays are gonna hit on you and somebody's gonna steal it. Those leather things look like they got iPads in them in them. Crackheads love that shit. Plus, you're carrying around a big piece of hard leather and it sucks.

Buy a plain black carry on backpack and leave it at that. It's way more mobile. Get some black luggage that matches. You'll like it.

This is good stuff and it moves with you: http://www.dakine.com/w/bags/luggage and they got a black backpack that holds a laptop and got all kinds of other pockets with protective furs that are good. These are seventy dollars.

Stewardesses and airline workers laugh at people who's suitcase hits them in the head or can't fit under the seat. Security people laugh at you when it takes long to get your shit out.

If you got plain black and professional looking mobile shit those people are cool.

Aloha!

New Carry On - Vicious - 04-14-2012

It all depends on your travel pattern. For a frequent flyer like me a Tumi alpha is invaluable.

The measurements are maxed out, there's tons of pockets, they'll engrave your initials on it and give you a really good lifetime warranty.

It'll set you back a cool $600 but if you travel a lot it's money well-spent.

I frequently switch shoulders, and then carry with the handle. It helps with messenger bags.

Yeah I don't carry any military style luggage. Sporting a rucksack or American flag on your bags can make you a target.

Looking at the leather bag again I agree. I'll end up buying the messenger bag and the backpack. Good eye Kona.

@vicious- I've been wanting a rolling carry on. It's not feasible if I'm carrying a rolling main bag and a suit bag. That's why I wanted the carry on to strap to my back or shoulders. However, when I start making short 4 day jaunts, the bag like you posted will be the way to go. It's nice too not to have the hassle of checking bags.

New Carry On - pitt - 06-18-2012

I am looking for a bag that helps me when im taking short trips, i cant take a big luggage when im travelling locally. Hopefully one where few of my clothes will fit.

Do you have any suggestions for something cheaper? That price is a little out of my desired range. Looks like quality though. My travel style is changing, and I need absolute efficiency.

This thread bump came at a good time as I'm looking to load up on clothes and other gear in BKK, do any of you guys have experience with stuffing your luggage and carry on with as much shit as possible, any tips? Most airline seem to have a 30 Kg limit for stowed luggage, not sure about carry on, but I saw some people on a flight today with some pretty big carry on bags, little suit cases. I'm gonna buy bigger luggage in BKK to carry as much gear as possible.

New Carry On - Bolthouse - 05-18-2013

The big airlines never way carryons so stuff it with as much shit as you can. In BKK last year there was this stand that would vacuum seal the clothes you bought into big ziploc bags and make them tiny, so I literally fit over 50 tshirts in a carryon, plus a bunch of other stuff.

New Carry On - Aliblahba - 05-18-2013

Damn scotian how many of these do you plan on bringing back?

the key to this is buying a lightweight bag. if you are capped at 50lbs you dont want a 15 lb bag.

New Carry On - Dulceácido - 05-18-2013

Get this. I have it and it's awesome. It's a roller bag that has a detachable backpack that zips onto the roller bag. Bad-ass and very sturdy.

That's bullshit. I took a flight from USA to Germany via Swiss airlines - they made me weigh my carry-on bag and told me that it cannot be more than 8KG (17.5pounds). Perhaps it was due to the nature of my backpack as it was relatively deep so I ended up actually taking out my laptop and hand carrying it after that.
