In the movie but even more in the book Jarhead its written a part of this. The soldiers had even a wall of the cheating wives / gf and so on. In Northern Ireland when a guy was in prison for IRA stuff they did watch out that the gf / wife did not cheat. By make it clear to her that her support was important but also to the guy that tried to hit on her. Today women can get away with this stuff.

I don't remember the title, but I read an autobiography by a US infantrymen who served in the European theater of WWII. He said it was fairly common for his comrades to get letters from wives or girlfriends in which they admitted, or implied, that they weren't being faithful. In one case, one of his squad members got a letter from his wife, who he hadn't seen in a year, saying that she was pregnant and what a great development it was for their marriage. The guy went ape shit and had to be taken off the line and sent to the psych ward. The Germans would drop leaflets over Allied lines telling them that they're women weren't being faithful.
Women's hypergamy can have serious consequences on men at the front. It probably does behoove a tribe or society to slut shame the women of its fighting men just for that reason.

In my platoon of 42 guys no less than 5 guys found out their wives or gfs were cheating whores including my own. I got a message from her best friend telling me she fucked some guy in his car at a party.
This is so common we have name for the guy who's inevitably going to be fucking your girl. We call him Jodi.
Here is the Urban dictionary definition.

This is a huge part of the reason why many soldiers and officers are getting out.
Because the military doesn't seem to truly have their back, at home. Sure, you can lose your job if you sleep with the wife of another soldier. But nothing happens to that woman, unless she's military herself. Even then, it's rare that something does happen.
It's the biggest reason why I do my best not to marry whilst in the military.

If the wife had remained faithful (one might dream), it would actually be one of the most perfect and endearing pictures I've ever seen. Could have become an iconic pic, symbol of military life and hope, fatherly love and happy couples. Instead, the cheating wife tainted everything... too bad.
