What actual "brand" of Melatonin do you guys recommend? - Mr.GoodThread - 02-21-2016

I read through a few threads and other than seeing a guy mention "Cellucor" which is not in my budget right now for my first Melatonin adventure, I didn't really see you guys mention any other brands of powders or pills?

I would be a newbie to melatonin. What brand should I research further on Amazon? What brands have you tried that I should avoid? Please let me know. Thank You.

I'm not sure about the brand but I suggest that you buy one where you can easily make your own dose/come with low doses because melatonin is more effective on doses ranging from 0.25-.50 mg and most brand's have dosages a lot over that range.

Titan, are you recommending a powder then

Oz, I might end up going with NOW. Currently I'm in a state of sleeplessness and daily drowsiness that I DO need it every day.

I'll try to start low though of course.

I've used the generic CVS brand (liquid) and it worked well, but since quitting drinking I sleep like a baby now without the need for anything.

I use a liquid, but a powder is fine too if it suits you.

Keep in mind that taking melatonin will most likely cause receptor down regulation. It may be difficult to fall asleep without melatonin if you take it on a regular basis.

You also need to understand this will only help falling asleep not staying asleep. I have a problem staying asleep and will most likely visit a sleep clinic soon because it is really bothersome.

With the NOW brand you can break the pill in half and it will work the same and cause less drowsiness in the morning. If not you are going to fill like someone drilled into your head.

You may want to try tryptophan as well. (It's what makes you sleepy when you eat turkey on thanksgiving)

It's an essential amino acid and Ive had good luck with it as a sleep aid

I have been using Nature Made 3mg for some years now to combat jetlag. Like someone else stated above it shouldnt be used daily. In the US you can get it at Safeway.

If the melatonin you buy doesn't keep you asleep, buy the "time-release" kind, it costs significantly more but works well.

I like Nature's Bounty 10mg capsules. They usually knock me out pretty well.

Given melatonin appears to be neuroprotective, has no real side effects for healthy people, and has been shown to improve sleep quality, is this a major problem?

Just make sure you have enough in stock.

I ended up going with Life Extension Melatonin 300mcg off of Amazon.com

I guess they'll be arriving before the week is over. I'll do 1 pill for starters (first 2-3 days) and try to top out at 3 pills a night, before getting back down to 1 pill, then none. I was about to go the 5mg/pill approach from the start, but some things I read here and there make me hesitant to do that. Still, the ultimate immediate goal is sleep, so I'll see what makes most sense.

I'll keep you guys posted. Thanks
