Huge trashcan and big mess next to the corn at the supermarket.
Why?
Corn retains moisture if unhusked.
There is no unseen insect damage, due to heavy use of pesticides.
I go to a store that sells bananas for 19c each and people don't remove the peels at the store because they don't want to lug them home.

This is serious.

Most Americans, despite their obsession with food (and eating in general), often don't know how to handle, cut, peel, or prepare produce, de-bone/skin meat, etc. I think it is more of a lack of knowledge than intent.

Grocery stores that have trash cans in the produce section are most likely just reacting to the behaviors of their customers and trying to prevent a mess, not the other way around.

For some reason the corn we get in the super markets is the worst. I've made the mistake of taking uncleaned corn home and discovered it to have been rotted on the inside. Other times half the kernels are all screwed up on one end. I clean it now to avoid bringing home bad corn.

I don't remember this being an issue when I was growing up as my mom would bring home uncleaned corn that I would have to clean before dinner.

The trick is to peel back about the first quarter of the husk and have a look inside. Kind of like opening a carton of eggs to check if they are all uncracked. Your not only looking for signs of rot, but also of underdeveloped or dried out corn.

As to the people who husk in the store- (1) I agree that leaving the husk on keeps in the moisture until you are ready to prepare, and (2) the corn husk is a great addition to a compost bin.

I husk corn at the store. Pretty much love to do it.

Never thought that it would be added to the Galactic List Of Political Incorrect Things. GLOPIT

Thanks for censoring the title, I don't think my eyes could have handled it.

Yeah just like bitches remove the wallet from betas before taking them home.

They don't want the beta, just the wallet.

Sounds like OP is describing the typical dirty Nebraskan. Iowa is full of these cheap proles. They husk their corn in public, bang their cousin Mary in private and vote straight-ticket Republican while living off the dole. They drink your town dry of Beast Lite and popskull vodka while moaning about not being allowed to raise their feral chickens in the backyard. No thanks.

Maybe because that's where the corn huskers hand lotion is?

and this is why I don't buy corn in supermarkets. When corn is in season, people selling it off the back of a truck pop up on the secondary roads...its always good and no one is shucking it at road side. I agree with the OP..do people peel their potatoes and onions at the grocery store? I've bought a lot of oranges that are shitty on the inside...should I peel them at the grocers as well?

Sounds pretty good to me. It's true that it would be more civilized to husk their corn in private and bang their cousin in public, but you can't have everything.

My cousins are good looking but I think they might be full on BPD, so WNB. However, my Nebraskan prole ass has been around the world and might be able to top you on a most abilities, technical, athletic, artistic or otherwise. Plus my chicken's eggs make amazing omelets [Image: smile.gif]

Just playing. Most people around these parts are assholes on the dole. [Image: banana.gif] But seriously though, my chicken's eggs are to die for.

Are we talking first cousins? Cause once we get down to third cousins or second cousins once removed, reminds me of this third cousin of mine. . .

Why isn't this in the Deep Forum?

Not entirely sure just yet, but I think this thread is not headed in the direction the OP intended.

Why the h*** do people remove cornhusks at the store? - Chauncey - 09-29-2015

Dear diary....

And how about those people who leave their carts all willy nilly in the god damn parking lot.

I am going to have to check out the produce section tomorrow and see what kind of shape the corn section is in.

Why the h*** do people remove cornhusks at the store? - eradicator - 09-29-2015

I assume people husk the corn to make sure it isn't rotten and is in edible good shape.

Edit
But of all of the things to be upset about, I am not really sure this is one of them.

I envy your problems.

Why the h*** do people remove cornhusks at the store? - trian1 - 09-29-2015

Let's not be too hard on OP:

Someone, somewhere is going to Google this very question, discover this forum and turn his life around (and hopefully also discover the proper way to check corn for freshness while retaining its moisture)

:-)

If that's at the forefront of your problems then safe to say your life is alright. This could probably just have gone in the Haters Lounge.
