This has been trending heavily today.

A new report predicts that a mega-earthquake could kill an estimated 13,000 people and destroy a sizable portion of the Pacific Northwest.

Even more disturbing? It's overdue.

The New Yorker reported that FEMA calculations show these types of earthquakes happen at regular intervals in this specific part of the world, roughly every 240 years.

"The Cascadia fault is an earthquake waiting to happen," Kaku stated. "We know it's going to happen with an energy 30 times the maximum energy of the San Andreas fault."

Kaku said Hollywood has "brainwashed" people into thinking that California is where the next massive earthquake will hit.

He added that before the mega-quake actually hits, there is a compression wave that is detected by animals.

"Animals start to act very strange. We've seen that happen before earthquakes," Kaku said. "And then, a minute, two minutes later, boom!"

The massive quake, with a magnitude of up to 9.2, would last about four minutes, according to seismologists, with a wall of water following about 15 minutes later.

Kaku said he's concerned that many of the 70,000 residents in the potential "inundation zone" have very little knowledge about this risk.

"It barely rates on the radar screen," he said.

Shep asked Kaku whether he would live in the Pacific Northwest if he had children.

"I'd think twice," he said, advising residents to educate their children on emergency preparedness and what to do in case of an earthquake.

The last one was more than 300 years ago, in 1700, when a quake there sent a 600-foot wave of water all the way to Japan.

Just live in a solidly built reinforced concrete building, not some garbage wooden residence, and you should be safe even in case of a massive earthquake.

I think most earthquake events are two/three-fold events. First you got the immediate quake damage, then, depending on where the quake originates, you might have to deal with the resulting tsunami from water displacement in the sea,and lastly, you have to deal with societal and economic damages, which usually ranges a longer time span. Even if you live in a concrete building, you still will have to deal with the aftermath of a slowed down, or worse case, collapsed society infrastructure, being unable to allow access to the daily essentials, e.g. water and electricity

Distant relative works at a high level in some emergency planning function for whatever district includes Seattle. According to him, it will be a major shitstorm when it happens. Their #1 priority after sheltering people and getting in water will be to reopen rail and highways to transport food and supplies in from the East. It will be weeks to months of living in post-Katrina conditions. If I lived there I'd have a bug out bag in every car and detailed emergency plans.

Reports indicate these tremors are emanating from a large, possibly organic structure approaching the Western shore.

^^ Oh how the mighty have fallen.... WSB (Would Still Bang)^^

Is this "megaquake" going to send tsunamis off in the other direction and they will still be devastating by the time they reach Asia?

Shouldn't the west coast be worried about the mega drought that is actually happening? Maybe the wall of water will fill up all the dried up lakes.

I'm willing to accept one massive earthquake in trade for not having to deal with the shitty weather in the rest of the country.

Well one thing's for sure, when this happens, there will be a massive decrease in SJW bullshit afterwards.

600 ft tsunami?! Good lord, I hope it doesn't come to that. Not after the recent nuclear disaster in Japan and most of Asia/SEA populous areas are on the coasts.

For the love of god, i expected more from the guys here. Remember the year 2000 and the world was going to end, how about swine flu or bird flu which was going to be the next bubonic plague and lets not forget 2012 and the Mayans or Ebola is going to kill us all. Its just fear mongering to keep people distracted from things that really matter.

Pheonix, generally you are spot on that we allow ourselves to be manipulated and fearful but I think that in this case, guys on the west coast should at least be thinking about how they will respond to an earthquake. It will probably happen.

California is facing three things:

1. Mega earthquake sometime in the future.
2. Current intense drought.
3. Socialistic dumbasses running the state.

Ironically, the third is worse than the previous two combined. Think about that for a second.

Duck and cover.

Have a decent supply of water

Have a charger for your phone in your car.

I don't have an earthquake readiness kit anymore, but probably should have one.

I probably should buy a gun. When the big one(the megaquake) strikes, we will see rioting that makes the Rodney King riots look tame.

I've always wondered this...hear me out. Is it remotely possible to have a pseudo Sharknado situation, where a tsunami that large carries say a great white into inland?

I am currently in Northern California's central valley. I should be safe.

When the water clears, that will be the central river

Nobody knows when the quake wkllle hit so its useless to sit and worry about it. The one need is prevention and from what I can remember only SF has put in real dollers in to widespread mandated structure re-enforcement.

Some of the reasons I believe that SF has such high housing costs us because they have restrictive by-laws for height which are tied to the earthquake prevention UB making the structures cheaper to build and reenforce versus taller buildings.

Not sure what the hell LA has been doing or Oakland but I don't think it has been to the same level of aggressiveness as SF.
