2 Guys in 2 Days asked to use my phone -Scam? -
stpete - 07-07-2015
Yesterday I pulled up at night to park my car and go to the gym. Some guy walked up to my car as I was sitting inside and asked to use my phone to call a cab. (He was a window washer guy)
Today I pulled into the car wash and another guy came around the corner holding a phone and asked if he could use my phone to make a call. He told me his phone was not working.
I never had this happen before and now 2 guys in 2 days. Coincidence?
I gave neither of these guys my phone and told the second guy I didn't have a phone ....which seemed to be the best answer. I don't like to lie but this is the world we live in......
Maybe this is some new "thing". Just putting it out there to be aware. You have to realize our smart phones are expensive and if they can unlock them it is easy money. Plus all kinds of private info on there.
My 2 cents

Yeah, sounds fishy. My uncle made a post a couple weeks ago about how people in the city he'd just moved to (in America) kept coming up and asking to use his phone as well.

You must be in st.pete florida.
It seems like all the hood rats got you on your toes. Never know when they will leave their 'nest' and decide to hit up to the north side to do some hood rat shit. Also you gotta watch out for all the stupid homeless people who need "a cab" or "money for a bus" because they are "stranded".
If it is an average looking clean cut dude or some skinny hipster I wouldn't worry about it though. Chances are they just need a phone to use. Worst case scenario you run chase their ass down.

I remember seeing that video a few months ago. I loved watching that punk get slammed into the concrete.
Who in their right mind would try to do some shit like that in the hood?

People only seem to ask me to borrow my phone when I'm plastered as hell. Luckily, a simple shake of the head gets the job done.
I was a fast food joint late at night with friends and some guy targeted me, but I diffused it quickly enough. I just don't let anyone use my phone now, if I can help it.

2 guys in 2 days is not a significant enough dataset to make assumptions with.

It is a scam, they take the phone to make a call and then run. Like "hey bro, can I borrow your wallet"

"Sure, here is my £300 smartphone good sir. Don't want you to think I am a tight arse!"
Anyone who falls for that deserves to be robbed.

Do you live there? I spent a month in the neighborhood called Child's Park.

It's possible.
You can set up a high-cost phone number that give you a share for any call that is made there.
Another more elaborate scam is to let someone else use your phone for an international call. I saw on TV once where a guy in Brazil was offering cheap calls to Europeans. What he would do later on is take the phone number they called to and scam them via various pay-per-call tricks.
Keep in mind that you can set one of those numbers at a cost of 500$/call - even if you hang up instantly.
Another scam is for an unknown number to call you. If you return the call and don't realize that it is one of those, then you may be charged hundreds of dollars.

Considering all the jackasses that fall for that Nigerian scam where they email you to help them access funds in a Nigerian bank, I bet this phone scam is really productive.
What do you think - 1 out of 10 says yeah? 1 out of 20? Either way, that's a profitable day.
And a little adrenaline rush to boot. I bet they target people sitting in situations that make it difficult to get up and give chase too.
