Cars, Motorsport, Racing: Documentaries and Movies - Atlantic - 12-26-2014

Hoping to get a thread together for the guys who are passionate about cars and racing. Post up your favorite movies/documentaries/YouTube videos.

If anyone has some cool old school racing or rally videos they like I would love to see them.

For now:

This is filmed in my area and it shows the local racing culture is here.
With Mika Häkkinen. Good vid.

Chaos ever do some amateur rally racing at home?

Ive been looking into it in Alberta and seems like all you need is a car and a helmet. Might start up this summer when works gets slower.

^ only for fun a long time ago.

As a 12-13 year old youngster together with some friends we used to buy some old piece of shit cars and make tracks on the frozen lakes. In summer times we used to drive on tiny gravel roads far into the forests or in the fields after the harvest.
All our money were spent on gasoline.

Damn. Thinking about this makes me want to do some ice racing again.
It's fun as hell.

I like the bikes.

Here's a documentary of the 500cc era of MotoGP. Back when the bikes were twitchy two-strokes without the electronic rider aids that that they have now, which many feel has since watered down the sport...

I first came across Alex Roy through the blog of Tim Ferris, who interviewed him here: http://fourhourworkweek.com/2007/11/14/m...g-records/

I enjoyed reading his book "The Driver" and waited patiently for the documentary to be released.

It finally came out, and even though the woman directing it caused a lot of problems for the development, it's still a really fascinating story:

Video taken in 1986 of a hotlap around the infamous Nurburgring in a RUF CTR also known as the "Yellowbird".

Ive been through hundreds of such videos, and I have to say this is possibly the most intense ive ever seen. Still puts a bead of sweat on my forehead whenever I watch it. Keep in mind that this is 1986, the car is a tail-happy rear engine, rear wheel drive Porsche with zero stability control or even power steering. What this basically means is that for the entire 14-mile length of the track, its basically trying everything it can do to kill you.

Legend has it that shortly after Stephen Roser completed this record-breaking lap, multiple people lost their lives in the ensuing weeks and months trying to beat his lap time. I'm not sure how true that is, but judging by the absolutely ferocious speed at which he took every turn, its not entirely unfeasible.

When I think of racing I think of Steeve McQueen. A man who lived in real life the way he did on screen.

I recently saw this movie on a flight to Hawaii, it was fantastic.

Awesome clip, Atlantic, vintage 911s are the best! Great thread!

There are a lot of European dudes like that guy that come to southern California and pick up these beauties to flip in Europe, especially when the Dollar drops (less the case now). The SoCal weather is perfect for cars, as long as you watch out for the sun. Living on the other side of the continent it's much harder to keep a nice vintage car, I keep mine garaged all winter.

Another doc featuring Steve McQueen, 1970s classic film about vintage dirt bikes:

and here's the Steve McQueen film whose trailer Bateman posted:

Here's another good one about Baja 1000, "Dust to Glory":

and a more recent doc on GP Moto racing, arguably the most demanding racing discipline:

This one was a great inspiration for me back in the 80's (long before Go-Pro); V-Four Victory, with the great Joey Dunlop on the new Honda V4.

His droll, understated commentary is a treat.

I've seen and like most of the movies above.

Here is Rush, a movie about the 1976 Formula 1 season. It is not a doc, it is a legit movie and probably one of my all time favorites. I'm sure all of us can appreciate James Hunt who epitomised the international playboy racing star with a DGAF attitude, contrasted to his rival with utter beta tendancies with woman (but still a likeable character in his own way).

Rush (2013 film)

I can't find a link that I can embed, but just search "Rush movie" it is worth it.

Don't follow the sports but I'll sit back and watch Isle of Man clips every now and then.

Would love to have the time and money to race bikes, cars, or planes:

Real life can be more like this at the moment:

Fantastic documentary about Paul Newman's racing career. I own it and have watched it many times.

Anyone who enjoys racing and red pill comedy should listen to the Director Adam Carolla's podcasts.

Two documentaries on Netflix caught my attention recently that were enjoyable.

Journey To Le Mans. The film follows privateer team Jota Sport in their attempt to qualify for the 2014 24 Hours of Le Mans. As someone not terribly familiar with the European endurance racing circuit beyond Le Mans, I found it an enjoyable learning experience.

Apex: The Story of the Hypercar. The film looks at HyperCard from Koenigsegg, Ferrari, McLaren, and Porsche and how these cars have come to be the new pinnacle of the automobile since the Bugatti Veyron.
