This has been a serious problem for me lately. I've been doing lots of stair running to train for rowing crew, and after about 20 staircases I'm full on sprinting to bathroom to avoid shitting myself. I can handle the pain in my quads and the general fatigue that accompanies a stair run, but shitting myself mid-run is a line that I'm unwilling to cross. I'd really like to avoid this once the actual season starts.

What are some things you guys do to slow down your metabolism/prevent your bowels from acting up during a run? I'd really appreciate advice on this. This doesn't really happen when I run on hills or flat ground, mostly just when I run continuous stadium laps.

I've heard this is common with distance runners. Better to find a way to unload beforehand.

A few hours before the race, take an enema to empty yourself out. Then take 2-3 Immodiums (loperamide). That way you will have an empty rectum and the anti-diarrheals will constipate you for the duration of the run.

Dude I used to have the same thing playing basketball! It's the up down motions or something like that, bizarre for sure.

All I ended up doing was force squeezing one out beforehand. Idk about that enema suggestion (wtf? Lol) that's a bit extreme but different strokes and all that

I always "dump before I pump" or do cardio.

I notice certain preworkouts make me dump before I lift.

Try to find a food that triggers a bowel movement for you. For me it's a banana or one of those sugary energy gels. Then take a big dump before every run. I guess an enema is an option if your bowels refuse to cooperate.

I think this is actually a serious topic. I've had to cut short runs several times over the years because of bowel cramping. It's not a pleasant experience.

Same thing happens to me all the time. I deal with it by either a) choosing a route that has a public restroom along the way; or b) running on somewhat secluded trails and letting nature take its course naturally. I always run with tp.

The best thing you can do is establish a regular time of the day to run. Your body can establish a rhythm around that.

Usually people choose a time in the morning or first thing after work. Pick a time and stick to it.

I don't know the scientific specifics, but I ran cross country and track in university and met plenty of pro runners and that's what nearly everyone does and most all the coaches recommend. Your digestion will adjust after a week or two, provided you eat relatively healthy

You can time your meals and your bowels.

When I am in my food and gym peaks I will generally eat around the same time and I can expect my shit at the same time usually also. For a while I was having to go each night between 9-11pm which was annoying since I like to be empty before I shower and go out.

If your running at a set time in the mornings then move back your last meal that prior day so it exits sooner, make sure it has enough fibre to ensure consistency with digestion and expulsion.

What Kosko said. I don't know how you "set" it, but I've managed to work my shit time into 5-6pm or so. Mainly because I only like crapping at home!
