"and requiring them to fill out a questionnaire after deplaning, will be for people arriving from Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, the three countries hardest hit by the epidemic."

I'm sure they will honest and answer truthfully. Surely no one will lie on the form.

They need to do mandatory screenings, not fucking surveys.

Oh, and as for the situation in Madrid, media are attributing it to "human error" as if that makes any difference to the rest of us, you know, humans...

Shit is fucked.

A chain of human errors led to the first case of Ebola contagion in Europe and a nation on alert with dozens of people under observation for symptoms of the disease.
...
Six people have been quarantined, including her husband Javier Limón Romero and two nurses who also work at Carlos III. Over 50 others remain under observation.
...
After that, Romero took a few days off with one sole instruction: to take her temperature twice a day and get in touch with the hospital’s occupational hazard department if she felt anything was wrong – standard procedure for those who have been in touch with Ebola patients.

Romero soon began to feel sick, but this did not prevent her from sitting an official examination along with 20,000 other people on September 27 to try to secure a permanent contract as a nursing assistant in the Madrid public health system.

On either September 29 or 30 – the dates vary according to the sources – the woman called the hospital to report a fever of under 38ºC and general weakness. She was told that her symptoms were indeterminant and to go to her primary health center in Alcorcón (Madrid). Sources there say Romero never explained that she had been in contact with Ebola patients, and was sent home with a prescription for painkillers.

On Tuesday, a Health Ministry official admitted to the SER radio network that Romero perhaps should have been immediately placed in isolation rather than waiting for her to reach a fever of more than 38.6ºC – the temperature at which health protocols consider that a risk of Ebola exists. Below that, the virus is not thought to be active enough to pose a risk of contagion.

Looks like this could turn into a modern Black Death. If that's the case it would significantly lower the population which would please the people who claim that we have to many people on the planet.

They want an Ebola pandemic in the United States.

Quite a conspiracy theory.

Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.

A free country like the US that does not keep checks on its citizens can't oversee the vast transit of people coming and going across its borders and what they are up to.

It makes me even more uncomfortable because these people who are running the CDC have advanced degrees (M.Ds and Ph.Ds) and are STILL making these mistakes.

It's showing more and more that going to graduate school and college is a big fat complete joke. Didn't these egg heads ever watch a zombie movie?

So if a bridge collapses does that mean that Engineering school is a joke and a waste?

If a patient dies, does that mean attending Med and Nursing school is joke?

In other news, Dallas might have it's second Ebola case. Some fucker showed up at a clinic with symptoms and had contact with Eric Duncan previously.

Ebola Pandemic 2014 - Foolsgo1d - 10-08-2014

Ah, to bear witness to an actual "oh shit" moment in history. Where hollywood has tread hundreds of times we now witness the startling reality that we could not possibly stop a pandemic of biblical proportions from ravaging the planet.

Lets be honest here, unless you come into direct contact with Ebola or you were in the immediate vicinity of a patient coughing and sneezing into the air around you, you will not catch it.

Then take into consideration how many doctors and nurses, plus medical disposal are assigned to deal with just one patient.

I have been in hospitals enough throughout the years to know that at any given time, the majority of wards are not designed to contain such diseases. Now if there was a flu which was airborne and had a short incubation period I have my doubts over how well containment will last.

If anything Ebola should be treated as a trial run of control measures. Imagine if an airliner was hijacked tomorrow and used as a weapon. We would stop air traffic immediately.

But with Ebola? Something tells me a slow moving disease isn't worrying politicians or people in general when in fact the most people a plane can carry is below 400. How many are dead from Ebola? 3000+

I believe they're scared to be seen as racist with regards to blocking/reducing flights from Africa.

Ebola Pandemic 2014 - Mentavious - 10-08-2014

They are going to start using 'heat screenings' meaning if your temp is above a certain number then you will be pulled aside for questioning

The obvious problem is that symptoms can take a couple of weeks to appear
Anyone with with a high fever is now suspect

They will only be doing this at 5 airports and with passengers coming directly from a few countries in West Africa

They still haven't found a way to do it with persons making a connecting flight in Europe. Liking to make arrangements

There are not too many people in Europe or in the US, isn't that why the people in the liberal Cathedral tells us that we need immigration of third worlders by the millions? That we are not enough?

Of course, at the same time these people tell us that the world is horribly overpopulated.

Cognitive dissonance is a hell of a drug.

Probably. It is something more than racism though, they behave in the way of religious people. The dogma is open borders, one world and to divert from it probably causes a great deal of mental anguish. They will, like other religious people, go to their deaths defending irrational beliefs. I can't believe people don't see the obvious religious undercurrent here. The white people traveling to Africa to 'save' them, is it any other motivation, than the priests saving their souls? Then they risk of course being martyrs and they certainly can claim the moral superior position to those of us who will not contribute to saving the world.

Yes, that's a good quote. Eventually though, if you're paying attention, you have to either admit that the people running this show are completely and utterly incompetent to a degree that is almost impossible to imagine, or they know damn well what they are doing and are intentionally running this country into the ground.

Personally I find it difficult to believe that incompetence can explain such monumental idiocy as not closing down air traffic from Liberia because, "that won't help stop the spread of the disease." That's a flat out farce that came straight from the head of the CDC.

The excuse that we can't keep track of our borders is asinine. No one is suggesting to lock down the Canadian and Mexican borders, they're simply saying that non-essential air traffic from the infected parts of Africa should have been shut down weeks or months ago. There's absolutely no reason such a simple precautionary measure shouldn't have been taken.

And honestly, suppose what you're saying is true: it's sheer incompetence at work.

Does that actually make you feel better about the situation? Frankly, that might be the even more terrifying possibility.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/natio.../16926553/ You guys see this? A cop who was in the quarantine apartment went into an urgent care with ebola symptoms. Now they've quarantined everyone that was in that urgent care. If a white american gets it, in country, and he's a cop, people are going to lose their minds.

Why are people acting like complete morons? If you think you have Ebola you call 911, you don't dally into a medical facility. Again, what is going on here? Did no one inform these people about Ebola protocol? Billions and billions spent on something like the CDC and disease prevention and they're behaving like idiots.

The other saying goes "Gross incompetence and malice are virtually indistinguishable". I too find the govt response so idiotic and absurd it becomes incredibly hard not to believe something else is going on, as tin foil hat as that sounds

Black swans can be mitigated to a large extent by skin in the game. I've heard Nassim Nicholas Taleb discuss two examples of this. One is that in some particular country, they make people who build/fix helicopters fly in them. The other is that in Babylon (I think) if architects and engineers built a building that collapsed, they were executed.

Maybe all of these CDC executive fuckwits (or their relatives) should be forced to work in one of those "quarantine" wards or do checks on people at the airport. You'd be sure right then and there that they'd sort out those procedures pretty damn quick!

As for the Spanish nurse... If she lives through this, she should never be allowed to so much as buy a Bandaid at a supermarket again given her gross incompetence when dealing with herself, let alone others. Then again, she comes from a third world country herself, so what could anyone expect?

Cholera (a bacteria) has evolved to the point where it can regulate its osmotic pressure while in water so it will not collapse/explode. Ebola virus on the other hand has shown no ability whatsoever while in water. Within a few moments of being introduced into a water source it would explode due to the difference in osmotic pressure

Also the chlorine would kill it
