I'm looking to switch internet service providers. Since I don't want to give money to the evil empire (Comcast) I've been looking into wireless options. Does anyone have experience with these and could recommend something?

I had dish and did my internet thru at&t for dsl which was fine. Was 19.95 not too bad after a year went to like 35. Now though they pushing uverse on everyone which is like double the price and you gotta buy a special modem and router if I recall.

The only thing I have heard and maybe not true is that internet from the cable company tends to be faster.

But I have looked at switching to AT&T/Directv because that combo seems cheaper.

What city are you located in?

It's fine if you aren't comfortable sharing on the forum.

Does anyone have experience with d-link? As I understand it, its a USB that gives wireless internet.

I also travel frequently, so mobile internet would be good.

D-Link is a company that makes internet routers, switches and modems.
Mobile internet is useful but expensive.

Mobile internet has very low data caps and is expensive, so if you plan on watching any movies over that it adds up fast.

Standard ADSL is technology from the 90s has a maximum down speed of 6mbits. However depending on AT&T's rollout in your area you can possibly get UVerse which is either VDSL or ADSL+2. ADSL+2 is slightly faster and up to 20mbits down (depending on many factors), but could be limited by the wiring. VDSL is great and can compete with DOCSIS cable service, it's what UVerse uses to run their IPTV system.

DOCSIS internet service from any cable provider is the only one that universally is fast everywhere. The technology is mostly identical in every market. Most cable providers are already on DOCSIS 3.0 although your older ones might still be using 2.0 that's still very speedy.

back in the day when I was a cheap young cyberpunk rascallion I would use backtrack linux and crack into people's wifis.

Just 'borrow' internet from your neighbors. Download Backtrack or Kali Linux and have some fun.

Not sure if your talking about cable internet ie t1 or internet through a cable company. As far as speed I had at&t dsl internet. Had two roomates three of us would play xbox watch movies plus phones and computers and speeds were fine for us if anyone is trying to save a few bucks but worried about speeds.

I considered that portable internet green logo sold in malls totally having a brain fart but Im sure some of you know what Im talking about. I hear that sucks. Ok just hit me clearwire I think.

You can always get a portable wireless device (mi-fi) from your cell phone company. I used to have one from AT&T and the service was exceptional.
