Trouble sleeping at night? Try white noise - L M McCoy - 03-30-2014

Going to sleep while playing "white noise" can help enhance your sleep. Although most people play white noise for their babies/infants it can help adults as well.

Anyway, there is no need wasting your money on a "white noise generator."

What I did was get sounds of the rain forest and heavy rain off of youtube (They can range from 1 hour to 11 hours). There's multiple ones you can have I.E. crickets chirping, sounds of the waves crashing, thunder storms, ETC

It takes the average person about 7 minutes to fall asleep. It usually takes me about an 1 hour to 1 1/2 hours to fall asleep. Now that I've been falling asleep to white noise I've been able to fall asleep faster/easier and I've been waking up more refreshed and energetic. .

If anyone wants more info, hmu

I can't sleep without some sort of white noise. When I'm at home, I'm running this baby all night and most of the day. Low setting when it's just me; medium when I've got a girl over and I want to drown out her breathing and tossing/turning. I've had it for going on three years now; it's amazing how much dirt/hair/lint/dust the filter picks up in a week.

Roosh made a great post at RoK about this some time ago:

Weed is pretty much my sleep solution as I've always had trouble sleeping even since I was young. The one problem definately become dependent on using it to fall asleep so if away on business or something I sometimes struggle.

I do like white noise or really any noise though, keeps your mind somewhat stimulated by the noise so you don't just lay in bed and let your mind wander and never be able to fall asleep cuz your thinking about biz ideas or what you gotta do tomm or whatever else.

People tell me you're suppose to "turn off your brain" when attempting to fall asleep. Seems like I'm always thinking about something

I have an hour-long rainfall recording that I play on repeat all night. Helps me fall asleep easier, and it's nice to wake up in the morning hearing a very natural sound. Like McCoy I'm always thinking - I'm a naturally high-strung person, my brain is always in overdrive.

I am the same.

ZMA has been great. I know it is supposed to be great for recovery, but I think it also is a great for sleep and staying healthy (zinc).

I also have a white noise maker.

Good combo.

An ex girlfriend got me one of these:

I had no idea it was so expensive until I just looked it up. Anyway there was a time when I had pretty bad insomnia and this was the only thing that worked, and it worked like a dream. I felt like I became too dependent though so gradually weaned myself off of it.

Exercise is key to a good night's sleep.

Ceiling fans are the single best investment I've ever made into my sleeping health.

Plus, my body temp rises during sleep. The ceiling fan keeps me cool during sleep and the white noise helps me fall asleep.

I can't be the only that CANNOT sleep if I have white noise/rainfall on.
The only time I've turned it on is when I wake up in the middle of the night and the neighbours blasting the news, it drowns out everything but I stay awake.

I almost always have something on in the background when I sleep. A podcast, audiobook etc. On very quiet but there nevertheless.

There's actually an online app for this:

simplynoise.com

Brown noise is the best of the three options for sleep. I leave it on a 3-4 hour timer before I go to sleep.

Try rainymood.com , I usually use it for background noise when listening to music or chilling but it could work.

Been doing this for years. It's easier for your mind to shut down when the noise floor is higher up. I live in an old school apartment building and the creaks are so annoying.

I have one of these to make the noise :

This shit is legit. I'm a light sleeper by nature so was interested in trying this out.

Downloaded the "White Noise" app for i-Phone and hooked it up to speakers in my bedroom.

Surprised how much better I slept than usual. Feel very refreshed this morning. Highly recommended!

thanks for those who posted above, I will have to try this.

Recently I have had some good improvement by doing two things - I put tinfoil on my windows to more completely block out light, and started ZMA. I am sleeping more completely and presumably deeper. Not sure which one to credit.

Another tip I can give you is the app "Sleep Cycle". It costs like .49c on the AppStore.

You start the app, enter the latest time you want to get up by and place your phone on the mattress.

The newer smartphones all have some type of motion sensor that in combination with this app helps you to measure your sleeping phases. It also plays white noise to make you fall asleep easier.

The app will wake you app when you are in a near awake sleeping phase unlike your normal alarm clock that might wake you up in a deep sleep phase.

At the beginning it is kind of hard because it might wake you up 30mins before your normal time but after some time you get used to it.

I feel a lot more refreshed and am longer awake at full energy than I was before.

Turn off all internet devices a few hours before sleep. Blue light from screens messes with your melatonin levels, hormone which regulates sleep. Turn off your wifi as well.

Get instead a 40W/60W lamp with orange or reddish light (lampshade), fade down the other bright lights in your room. Avoid late night exercise,, caffeine or alcohol (beyond the after dinner drink).
