Did this plan work for me? To some extent, it did. But the introduction of open couchrequests ruined things for me. And then I got jaded and stopped hosting.

When CS was overhauled, they made changes to the way search rankings functioned. It used to work like Airbnb where the more you host and the more positive references, the higher you'd float up in the search results for your city. Then they changed it because they thought it was unfair to new people and started pushing newbies up to the top of the list. I went from getting multiple couch requests a day to just a couple a month. If you don't rank in the first couple pages of the search rankings you might as well not even exist on the site. That pretty much fucked it up for me.

I've got laid a few times as a host. Here's my tactic.
I don't make a move unless I know there's some attraction there otherwise you risk couple of days of awkwardness and a possible neg/neutral ref.
If she's nice and you're not sure what's that about, get close and do some kino, her reaction will tell you where you're standing.
Cooking together helps to build up some attraction and then of course alcohol! If she's up for drinking with you then it's on! Sit on the couch to check some youtube shit while drinking and then take it from there. I think couchsurfing is an awesome site.
When I travel I always use it to meet women during the day. I dont stay at their place as you might waste your time with one girl who you dont connect with usually I meet about 6 during the week while doing daygame as well and usually out of the 6 you will have something lined up for the weekend for a second meeting and usually thats when they will stay with you. I don't think it's worth the effort.
Couch surfing girls are rarely above a 6. You may bang a 6, but it will mostly be due to luck. If you find a girl worth banging (in terms of looks), she'll have a million other guys with the same mindset and plan of attack. The odds are severely stacked against you, no matter how good your game.
The exception may be if you find a good-looking bitch and tailor your messages to her very narrowly. But you may as well just pipeline on OkCupid if you want to make that kind of effort.
The alternative would be to pipeline anyway using whatever (perhaps including couch surfing), and stay at some guy's place or a random girl (whom you have no intention of banging). If you bring a bitch over to your host's place, you risk a neutral or negative rating, or anyway bad feelings between your host and you. He or she may put the foot down and threaten to put you out on the street. But if you don't care about your profile ratings (after all, you can just make another and get references de novo from forum members), it would be a good way to cut down on costs.
Another thing: there definitely are good-looking bitches on couch surfing, in NYC. Game them just like anyone else through pipelining, and get them out for gaming, probably during the day. Bitches on couch surfing are more cognizant of their being run game on by thirsty dudes, and are less trusting. So I think you'd find more success, or about as much, elsewhere (Tinder, OkCupid).
On finding a host in NYC: tailor your message to someone with specific interests. People in NYC are deluged with requests for unknown people to stay at their place for a while. If you have at least a few references from RVF members, you can do it, but it will take effort. If you send a request more than 2-3 weeks in advance, you run the risk of being canceled on come the arrival date.
Basically: I think you can use CS to get a free place to stay. Unless you get lucky (and you very well may), you'll pay for it another way, for example by a weak, feminist beta host draining your soul. I hope you have more luck.

NYC hosts get more requests than probably anywhere in the world except maybe London. So they have a choice over anyone they want. It'll probably be tough to get hosted as a guy there, esp Manhattan since hosts there have the option of hosting girls 24/7. As for getting hosted by a girl, you can send some requests and see what happens. Nobody can tell you what will or will not happen. YMMV. Generally speaking though, I'd highly advise against trying to bring a girl back to your host's place. That's completely disrespectful unless the person has made it clear beforehand that they are cool with that. If you are trying to hook up with girls in NYC, then just rent something off Airbnb or save up a few extra days and get a hotel. Washington Heights (Manhattan) is good for Dominicans. Corona (Queens) is good for Mexicans and Colombians and it's cheaper.

Agreed, couch surfing is more for meeting good guys. The girls are busted, at least in the States.
The problem is the guys are generally weak and effeminate. Couch surfing generally now suffers from a malaise from which it will not recover. It is already dead in terms of quality, though if you're desperate to find a free place to stay, it is still useful.
However, there still are high-quality hosts on couch surfing, hosts who take the time and effort to show you around and get to know you. I've become proficient in screening such hosts based on their profile. I couldn't put it into words exactly, I just know a good host when I see it. Like pornography. Perhaps one day I'll post a write-up somewhere on how to spot a good host on couch surfing. I wonder if there'd be any interest?
But as it relates to this thread, I think that, as a stranger in a new city, there are more effective and efficient ways to get laid than couch surfing, especially with higher-quality women. Nonetheless, as others previously in this thread attest, you can pull good European poon as a host if you have a good place in a good area, in a major tourist destination.
Two quick stories:
- a guy messaged me on couch surfing last spring, in NYC, saying that I looked cool and wanted to meet up. He was a friendly, positive guy and we got some food in Manhattan. - I spent some time in Asia in 2013, and used couch surfing to stay with hosts. It was bloody brilliant. I had a place to stay wherever I went. Couch surfing can still be awesome, particularly in the less touristy areas where people are more willing to host you and show you around, probably because they get less visitors. This is what couch surfing was like circa 2004-2009 or so, before it sunk into the mire of a loss of direction. Was just reading the posts above regarding references. I only have references from girls so far. I think I need to get some CS people in friend's list and references who are guys.
I am pretty new to CS (about 8 months), but it has yielded results once so far. I have to say the girls (all Europeans) who had had a lot of previous CS experience were often cagey and sceptical and told me about hosts who said "Let's have sex." My success came from an unintiated guest. Sound advice from Mango44 there - give them space and be nonchalant on the first day.
Have never been hosted but I might try it, however, as others have noted, the order in which the hosts are displayed means you have to sift through tons of poor hosts. Any tips for improving this would be welcomed.

Bumping this rich resource to ask a question - how long do your guests stay on average? And do you ever leave them alone in the apartment? I am planning to host only on days when I'm not out for work, which are chunks of up to 3 days, never more. It's mostly because I'm afraid of theft (of my laptop, which is the only valuable - I don't see anyone trying to carry off a $50 Microwave).

3 nights is what I do as well as a max. You pregame online, and on the first, max second night its either deal sealed or busted.
