Question: Do the greatest intellectuals and entrepreneurs reach self-actualization at an early age (16-24) or later?
At what age do the greats generally discover a new medicine, start the new Facebook or crack a mathematical code?
There seems to be a dichotomy regarding this in literature.
On one side we have books like Mastery by Robert Greene that state that it takes a while for you to find your calling. With age comes wisdom.
However, a historical survey suggests that most revolutionary intellectual progress occurs in your teens and early 20s. John Nash, Albert Einstein or Mark Zuckerberg come to mind.
Thoughts? Personal insight?

I've read that the brain stops replacing cells at around 30 years of age, and that supposedly makes it harder to learn new things. I don't really believe it though. The only thing I've found harder to learn as I age is languages, and certainly pre-teen children are able to acquire languages much quicker than at any later stage in life.
Some of Steve Jobs' greatest work was at age 50-55.
Also remember that humans are healthier and medicine better than ever before, so what was true 100 years ago is probably irrelevant now.

Wisdom comes with age and experience. You can have a keen intellect in your youth and achieve great things, but lack the capacity to self-actualise through a fully realised world view. 30 was always considered the age of reason.
Did you really put Zuckerberg and Einstein together in the same sentence?

Zuckerberg the entrepreneur, Einstein the intellectual.
I would highly recommend reading The Facebook Effect to not only learn about his creative genius but to also see what a conniving businessman he really is. And this was published before he and Goldman Sachs ripped the whole world off on the IPO.

I would put Zuckerberg's success down to being in the right place at the right time. What Facebook did in the early days wasn't particularly unique or groundbreaking. He's in the same league as Justin Beiber and the Instagram guys, not Jobs, Gates, and other pioneers.

Your adult life only really takes off when you're capable of willingly dedicating yourself to something.
The way western society and schooling works at the moment is to keep everyone at the child level for much longer than is needed. Needing someone to tell you what to do all the time is ideal for both children and productive worker bees.
Though I'm successful enough now, I can't help feeling that with the right motivation I could have reached this point a lot earlier.
The young guys who get solid mentoring and advice on this forum and elsewhere are on the right track.
