Children's Book Writing Resources - JD11 - 11-05-2013

Had an idea for a side hustle involving a children's book series. I have written a few children's books freelance, but not sure I would consider myself a professional as of yet. I want to do this right and was looking into any resources on how to write children's books. Does anybody have experience with children's book writing? Or know of any resources for professionally writing a children's book series? Books, blogs, etc...

What age is your targeted readership?

Age the books will be written for is 4-10. Books will be illustrated as well.

There's a good report on this in the "Kindle Publishing Club" over at the Warrior Forum. Nice, simple strategy for churning out children's books fast, with no need for illustration. That part of the forum is private, but it's a $45 one-time fee or something like that, so it's worth it if you want to be a self-pubber.

The forum does seem a bit quiet for being fee-based, but the reports are good and more coming in the future.

I'll check Warrior Forum out. Appreciate it.

Don't get lost over there. lol A lot of shitty advice and scammers on the main forum.

The Kindle club I'm talking about is a subforum you have to buy access to. Here's a link to the sales page: http://www.warriorforum.com/warrior-spec...style.html

A lot cleaner in there than the rest of the forum because people pay to be there and the signatures are disabled. No promotions allowed.

You're probably going to have to narrow that age range down, especially considering most children don't read at four and five. With the illustrations, I'd imagine what you're going for is a "picture book" or maybe an "easy reader." It's possible to market something to the 4-8 age range, assuming the younger readers will have it read to them while the older ones will read it on their own. 8-10 year olds often read "middle grade" books, which are essentially easy novels.

Anyway, the best course of action is always to write the best book you can and then figure out who the readership should be. Figuring out who to market it to is a good problem to have. Although, you probably do want to be more aware of your implied reader when dealing with children's lit.

Yeah, primarily it will be 4-7 year old kids as the target market. Something that parents can read to their kids or a kid just learning how to read could read alone. Still, would like it to appeal to 8-10 year old kids that still like picture books.

Those kids are called retards. Probably a valid market, though.
