Groupon Travel Deals - JohnKreese - 11-05-2013

Not sure if this is the best forum for this, but I come across these every so often. Most of the time, it is some undesirable location during some shitty time of the year, but, about one a month, I'll get one that has some interesting looking deals. Maybe we can start a thread on these with Groupon, Jetsetter, etc. deals?

Moscow, 6 days/4 nights, 4-star hotel plus airfare from NYC = $899 ($1099 solo)

"Price per person based on double occupancy"

Wouldnt that make it 1800 for rolling solo?

I've considered some of these deals. Sometimes they include meals and tours.

I'm just curious if try penalized people if they skip out on the tours. If not then some of them on groupon and other travel deal sites are pretty good.

I've seen some to DR for under 700 tht includes air fare and 5 day stays at all inclusive resorts.

Read the fine print very very carefully. Usually they are limited to certain dates, or there are only a certain number of rooms available for every week/month.

Assuming that you can get the dates you want and the hotel is not crap, this seems like a good deal. Airfares right now are through the roof.

I've seen some report on shady all-inclusive resort deals that are basically bait and switch situations. The resort looks nothing like the pictures, half the facilities are closed, and your food options are so limited that you end up paying for food. I'd say be careful before booking one of those.

If it's just a regular hotel though, should be fine. The one thing to look out for is whether they guarantee you a specific hotel or not. If you know the hotel, you can look it up and see the location and find some reviews. Sometimes, the deals say "at X Hotel or a comparable location." Then you're rolling the dice. They could get you in with a sweet hotel and then switch you to some crappy place 30 minutes outside of town.

If you do buy anything off of Groupon, first go to Fatwallet.com or eBates.com... they will rebate you 3% of your purchase price.

I have bought a lot of shit off Groupon. Never had any problem. There is fine print, but it has always been the usual kind of stuff "offer expires Dec 31 XXX" and that kind of thing. Nothing "tricky". The only travel experience I used with Groupon was booking Niagara falls hotels (easy drive from Toronto) so I am not sure about it for exotic destinations. The site I use for travel is hotwire.com. It has some amazing deals. But I have come to learn that the better hotels seldom cut their rates too much under ANY circumstances.
