I start :

Places That Don’t Exist

Simon Reeve travels to a group of unrecognized nations – countries so obscure they don’t officially exist.

On his journey he visits little-known parts of the world including Somaliland, Transniestria, Nagorno-Karabakh, Ajaria, South Ossetia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Somalia, Moldova, Taiwan, and the former Soviet republic of Georgia.

In this series, Simon Reeve is taught to fish by the President of Moldova, becomes an unofficial Somali diplomat, and finds himself crammed into a lift with the President of Georgia.

He visits a little-known country stuck in a Soviet-era time-warp, and a mountainous state which claims to have the highest rate of longevity on the planet.

He meets a villager who sold a kidney to buy a cow, and children forced to live in freezing railway carriages. Amid the minefields of Nagorno-Karabkh, Simon is pelted with snowballs by refugee children.

The Power of Nightmares by Adam Curtis. A three-parter (I think) in which Curtis examines how the threat of terrorism has been used as an excuse to introduce all sorts of questionable infringements of our liberty.

Overnight http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0390336/

The rags-to-riches-to-rags story of Troy Duffy, a blue collar Boston twenty something that struck a dream movie deal with Miramax in 1997 to direct the $15 million project "Boondock Saints" from his own script. It was a deal that received worldwide attention. But when Miramax jumped ship and put the film in turnaround, Duffy's overnight success soon starts to crash and burn.

This is not just a fantastic story; the film is beautifully produced. You can't pull your eyes away from it, just like a burning building, simply because you cannot believe this is non-fiction.

Best documentary I've seen in awhile would have to be Searching for Sugar Man, its the story of a Detroit area musician named Rodriguez who almost became famous in the USA back in the 70s but his career never took off and he then lived a marginalized life for the following two decades. Unbeknownst to him he was famous in Apartheid era South Africa and his music was some what of an anthem for the anti-Apartheid struggles over there. Many South Africans, who in the time before the internet, didn't have access to any news about him, had assumed he was dead. Then post-Apartheid they realized he was alive and the guy went over to South Africa and did a tour and became somewhat famous again and rejuvenated his music career. Very interesting story: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2125608/

Mind of a Millionaire

Today, more and more millionaires are truly self-made and most of them are people just like us. They started off in similar jobs to us, attended similar schools and had similar opportunities. But unlike us they've made a million. By getting up-close and personal with twelve inspiring self-made millionaires, a team of psychological profilers will examine the character behind success, and discover what we can learn from them.

Old VHS rip of Og Mandino from 1990, so excuse the "quality."

Believe this was titled "The Greatest Secrets To Success."

For those who have heard Og before, you'll recognize the stories told...otherwise enjoy.

would not say it was the best, but was damn interesting watching how people change and stay the same over time. Called The UP series....

The Up Series is a series of documentary films produced by Granada Television that have followed the lives of fourteen British children since 1964, when they were seven years old. So far the documentary has had eight episodes spanning 49 years (one episode every seven years) and the documentary has been broadcast on both ITV and BBC. In a 2005 Channel 4 programme, the series topped the list of The 50 Greatest Documentaries.

David Attenborough's nature films are among the best documentaries.

Aside from Life on Earth, you have the Living Planet, Trials of Life, Life in the Undergrowth, Life of Birds, Life of Mammals, the Private Life of Plants, Blue Planet, Life in the Freezer, Life in Cold Blood, Earth and more. If you watch these series you'll know more about the diversity and evolution of life than almost anyone outside of academia.

80 Blocks From Tiffanys

Quote:Quote:

in 1977, Saturday Night Live director Gary Weis—inspired by Jon Bradshaw’s investigative feature for Esquire on New York gangs, “The Savage Skulls”—ventured into the South Bronx with a small film crew to document street gang culture. The result was 80 Blocks from Tiffany’s, a raw, sobering, and humanistic portrait of the young African-American and Puerto Rican men and women who made up two of the most notorious South Bronx gangs, The Savage Skulls and the Savage Nomads. Then, the film was shelved.

Quote:Quote:

Shot over the course of a couple of weeks in the summer of ’79 (as the seeds of hip-hop culture were slowly sprouting in the BX), 80 Blocks from Tiffany’s, produced by Lorne Michaels, veers away from the social commentary typically associated with gang exposés. Instead, the 60-minute documentary focuses on the personalities behind the news reports, including a tough NYPD detective from the Bronx Youth Gang Task Force and a sympathetic community activist.

Quote:Quote:

What’s the story behind 80 Blocks from Tiffany’s being shelved until now? I made this film along with three others to take the place of the hour and a half programming when SNL was on summer hiatus. It was paid for by the entertainment division at NBC and it was not a very big budget at all. After it was made, NBC loved it, but then ABC had just been sued for a movie they made in their entertainment division of the news. NBC was afraid to show it. They said it would have been fine if the news division had done it. Back then the film was too hardcore for NBC. It’s a nostalgic film about a part of New York that is long gone. As bad as it was then, these guys are nowhere near as bad and organized as the gangs we see today.

Cocaine Cowboys is probably my favorite. No explanation needed.

The Thin Blue Line directed by Errol Morris. A man is convicted for the murder of a Texas police officer, even though the evidence points to someone else.

I'll second Searching for Sugarman. Very cool, and I love Sixto Rodriguez's music.

If you're into crime/drama, Paradise Lost (I, II, III) was absolutely insane. Its made by HBO, and they're spaced out about 5 years apart each. Basically three boys in West Memphis are murdered and they pin it on three teenagers. The trial was a joke and they serve many years of prison time (I won't spoil the rest, its in III). Many of the characters in the documentary themselves are batshit crazy and you think they may have done it.

I don't normally watch too many crime/police/law shows or documentaries, but I thought this one was really well done, especially the fact that they have weeks of footage and repeat interviews, not just a quick stop.

The contrast of the British host with the prisoners is used effectively, and it gets me wondering if he's just that ignorant, playing it up for the camera, or a bit of both.

There's also enough Red Pill material in there between gang hierarchies and dominance, how the female guards interact with prisoners, etc.

Kidnap Ronnie Biggs - Channel 4
http://www.channel4.com/programmes/kidnap-ronnie-biggs
The remarkable story of 'Operation Anaconda,' the 1981 mission to kidnap Ronnie Biggs from Rio and bring him back to British soil.

Story about how one of the Great Train robbers was snatched from a restaurant in Rio and put in a bag as an anaconda and passed through customs. A really interesting story and a well made documentary.

Restrepo

Description: "Restrepo" is a feature-length documentary that chronicles the deployment of a platoon of U.S. soldiers to Afghanistan's Korengal Valley. The movie focuses on a remote 15-man outpost, Restrepo, named after a platoon medic who was killed in action. It was considered one of the most dangerous postings in the US military. This is an entirely experiential film: our cameras never leave the valley, we dont interview generals or diplomats. Our only goal is to make you feel as though you have just done a 90-minute deployment. This is war, full stop. The conclusions are up to you.

The best documentary I have ever seen is Mark of Cain (2000). It is about a Russian prison and the symbolism of russian prison tatoos. It is truly incredible.

This documentary inspired the movie Eastern Promises starring Viggo Mortensen who was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor.
