Hat Yai, Thailand - Lumiere - 08-22-2010

Anyone been

Is it worth checking out?

I have been offered a free return flight from KL to Hat Yai for next weekend but want to know is the place worth checking out?

hm, both yes and no.. I haven't checked out the nightlife there, but it is an interesting city cause there aren't really any tourists nor expats there and then you have got the malaysian/muslim influence. Girls walking around wrapped in scarfs, that stuff. The city center is kinda cool to stroll around in. I would say that if you aren't passing through anyway, it might not be worth the hassle. If you are really into thai culture rather than just fit girls and party it might be cool enough to check out though.

I guess it is the least interesting mid-sized city I have been to in Thailand (comparing to chiang mai, krabi, kanchanaburi, ayutthaya)

Krabi is close by though, right?

I could do both

Whats worth seeing and doing in krabi ?

Krabi is the center for all the lonely planet 'activity' stuff, so if you are into that you can climb, hike, kayak and all that stuff. I guess it is something like 3 hours from Hat Yai. And then there is an abundance of good restaurants around. The beach is near as well. There is a 'thai-style' disco a bit out of the city center. I can't remember the name, but try asking around. I witnessed the biggest bar fight I have seen in my life in that place - people fleeing into the street, guns being shot. Krabi is also the place to get boats to all the small lesser known islands.
