What Languages Do You Speak? - Walderschmidt - 01-22-2013

People have asked about age, height, etc. Some guys have even made Portuguese lounge.

I am curious about what languages do you all speak, and how long?

I'll go first.

I speak:
  1. English (native)
  2. German (conversant, almost fluent)
  3. French (basic)
  4. Portguese (survival)
  5. Russian (enough to greet a cop and piss him off)
I am working on cementing fluency and then I will move on to Russian and Portuguese. One day I may go back to France to get back my French.

What Languages Do You Speak? - Ovid - 01-22-2013

English (native)

French (basic, couple years in high school, I can get by in a basic conversation if I need to)

Latin (I can carry on a good conversation but until the time machine is invented, it's of limited utility.)

Spanish (beginner, the Latin and French make it much easier to pick up vocab. My goal is to be fairly fluent by the end of the year.)

What Languages Do You Speak? - LaPastillaRoja - 01-22-2013

English (Native)
Spanish (Fluent) - I often get comments from spanish/hispanic girls saying my Spanish is as good as they've ever heard from a gringo before, I attribute this to learning it organically vs various programmes
Portuguese (Conversational) - Learning very quickly because of similarities to Spanish but having some pronunciation problems, I attribute this to not learning organically and using programmes
French (Basic) - I know a few key phrases, after portuguese this will be my next mission.

That's pretty damn impressive bro.

When you say fluent English, but Gujarati mother tongue, do you mean you moved here late in childhood or do you mean Gujarati is what your parents spoke but that you speak English as basically a first language? As in, do you have an accent?

VP that is impresive. Makes me question, don't you feel that dominating all those languages gives you like a 'fear' of forgetting 'this one' or 'that one', does it happen to you?

I only speak 3 languages so I don't feel that way, but I fear that if I start learning many more languages (say 2 or 3 more) there might be a chance of that actually happening.

What are your thoughts?
