Anyone been? I've got an invitation from a university there to come and conduct some 'research' next month, so I can avoid the visa fee. I'd be going by myself. From poking around online, it looks like I can get a decent apartment rental for about $60-80 a night near the center (with hostels running about the same price as what you'd find in Western Europe, if not more expensive).
My questions:
1) will going out alone be a problem?
2) likelihood of getting ripped off?
3) just how expensive is it? I've heard some horror stories

Never been there, but I think your attitude to a new place for just month is just too risk adverse.
I'd say just go there do your thing and don't be so afraid of minor things.

Moscow is the most expensive city in the world. The good side to that is that is once you get used to it, the whole world will then seem like a discount after that.

Speakeasy,
I like your thinking.

I'm not risk averse at all; I've traveled solo to much more intimidating places than Moscow. I'm just trying to gather information.
