Jesus. To those who know a bit about Japanese history and culture - was it this weird and macabre *before* the country fell to the US in World War II? Has it gotten worse since, or is its nature just more apparent?
That Independent article and Tuth's link go a long way towards describing why Japan is so so beta. And, though you can't explain exactly why, you get this gnawing sense there's something wrong with someone who enjoys anime. Same for 'bronies.'

My friend won't admit it, but he's a essentially a Japan-o-phile. He knows a lot about the culture, and is into video games, anime, etc. We had a long talk about why Japanese culture is so obsessed with children, and his theory is that it has something to do with the A-bomb.
