You hit the nail on the head. Identity politics is a poison to cure a poisonous bite. It is the symptom to lack of proper civic involvement and participation. You have citizens who treat the state as a river, and each special group within it as a boat. Everyone hangs on to dear life on their dinky identity rafts, and hope they don't fall into the abyss where they may have to actually compete on merit.

Everyone is involved, because the human ego doesn't allow for a loss to 'charged to the game'. People will internalize, and thus, create problems for themselves, their communities or society. Sometimes the internalization is so deep, you'll have outright riots, violence, war.

Schools in America don't seem to teach real civic participation, but I wouldn't know, I didn't go to school in America.

I can speak for my experience, I was taught from an early age that participating can make a big difference even if it doesn't seem that way.

Going back to the first federal election I voted in, I was dragged out of my cosy room, hazy eyed, by the dorms monitor. A generally conservative fellow, his speech was clear and precise "I don't care who you vote for, that's your choice, but you're Canadian citizens, and you WILL vote in this election". And off he marched us to the booths, knowing well that many of us would not vote for the party he supported. Now that's civic duty.

Wow... these people must have been fleeing some terrible danger back home in Syria for them to seek refugee status in Canada. But I can totally see how a noise complaint from a neighbour would be enough for a man to want to risk the lives of his entire family, because when your impudent infidel neighbours don't know their damn roles as inferior beings, it's just insufferable.

Compare that to Burmese refugees I used to work with in the woods of northern canada. Shit eating grins 24/7, very grateful despite working in brutal conditions and then would often work another job on the weekends.

When one was asked "why are you so happy all the time?" He replied "because no one shooting at me" another dude had a bullet lodged in his back that they couldn't remove, but you never heard him complain once.

They loved Canada, thought it was paradise, never bitched and worked their balls off.

I have been unequivocal that Canadians have a moral duty to help those in need, but when people who have fled war-torn regions are complaining about the hotel housekeeping services, it seems petty and ungrateful.

The Cross Cultural Learner Centre has been dealing nearly full time with the refugee efforts, and any resource strain appears to be shared across the country as other cities have been forced to wonder whether too many refugees are being brought in too quickly.

He added that “whatever Trudeau said, the fact is that the United Kingdom now has an opportunity to chart a much freer course in the world."

And he criticized Mr. Carney, who repeatedly warned that Britain would face serious economic consequences if it left the EU, including a possible recession. Mr. Carney has defended his remarks, saying it was his duty as the central bank governor to point out risks to the economy. But Mr. Farage and others on the Vote Leave side have said he went too far.

“I don’t want to be disparaging about one of your nationals,” Mr. Farage said. “I don’t think the governor of the Bank of England behaved in an independent manner during this campaign at all. And I think there will be some real questions in Parliament about whether it’s appropriate for him to continue in that role.”

Mr. Farage co-founded UKIP in the early 1990s, modelled partly on Canada’s Reform Party, and he has been fighting to get Britain out of the EU ever since. It was largely UKIP’s rising popularity in recent years that prompted Mr. Cameron to call the referendum. And despite the efforts of Mr. Cameron, world leaders, most of the cabinet, all the major opposition parties and nearly every economist, more than 17.4 million Britons voted to leave the EU compared to 16.1 million who voted to remain.

“I’m extremely happy, extremely happy, that the ordinary people, the little people have told the establishment what they think,” Mr. Farage said of the result.

Mr. Farage was a controversial figure during the referendum campaign and he was shunned by the official Vote Leave side, which was led by Conservative MP Boris Johnson and Justice Minister Michael Gove. However, he is being taken more seriously now as someone who understood the pulse of the nation better than most. UKIP has only one elected MP, but there could be an election this fall and many expect the party to do well.

“I think there are opportunities [for UKIP] but I also think there is a job to make sure that our Westminster political class, many of whom are somewhat gutless … that they actually carry out the will of the people and it is UKIP being there and posing a threat that will make them do that.”

As for how Canadians should react to last week’s vote, Mr. Farage said: “I think Canadians should rejoice that the country in the world that they are closest to in every way, just got back its democratic rights, rights that Canadian and British people stood side by side in two world wars, fought and died for.”
