What should I do to get in shape?

I am 135 lb 5'11 and 21 y/o. I transferred from community college to a commuter school that is pretty good. I am aiming to graduate and working. So not looking for tail immediately.

Start working out. Hard. Some Crossfit boxes are good, some not so good. I just switched to a gym and a Strongman competitor as a trainer after doing Crossfit for several months.

There are some really great things about Crossfit, but there's too much endurance and cardio work involved for me. I'm now working primarily on getting stronger and I have a long way to go.

Crossfit is a great way to get started, for the following reasons:

1) It has everything: strength, endurance, cardio, flexibility, etc.
2) You usually pay for a package of classes which helps in staying committed.
3) Most classes have a competitive element, both against yourself and against the rest of the class. This is very motivating.
4) You get exposed to a wide variety of exercises, from bodyweight to calisthenics to powerlifting and everything in between. It makes you realize which types of workout fit you and what's the type of stuff you like.
5) A point that often gets overlooked by beginners: you don't have to think. Just show up to classes and the coach takes care of everything else. No more analysis by paralysis and trying to figure out which workouts to do. As a beginner it is important to stop thinking and making excuses, and just exercise, any exercise, and keep at it.

All my life I have half-assed my workouts. Crossfit is what finally made things click for me and it has been the sole reason I now take working out seriously.

For me personally I stopped Crossfit after 2 months of 3x per week, to instead start a weightlifting routine in order to focus more on building strength and learning the proper form for each exercise. But what got me exposed to weightlifting in the first place was Crossfit. It's one thing to read about weightlifting benefits on an internet forum, and another thing to actually experience it, with a coach present that can teach you.

Crossfit definitely has its flaws too, but in my opinion nothing is better for beginners who need to get a little kick in the ass to get motivated.

I would strongly recommend doing Stronglifts for a beginner. You'll see newbie gains very quickly.

You're gonna want to start with Stronglifts, which can be found online. I assume your college has a gym so you won't need to purchase a gym membership.
You'll want to have at least 100 grams of protein per day.
Eat good quality food, no soy products, limit your process food intake.
Otherwise enjoy it man! You're gonna make rapid gains in your first year, especially on strong lifts.

I don't know where your starting from, but if you are just starting or coming back to training/exercise first you want to build a positive habit.

Start out easy, even if it means just GOING to the gym, and reward yourself, so it builds positive association.

For example, I've had a long break from running. I've run marathons before, but over the last year nothing. So I went for a mile, walk a bit, run a bit. Hahaha.

Felt good. I'll build up again in no time. Much better than embedding 'running = pain' into my head.

(maybe I missed the point of this thread, but my 2c)

Get a pull up bar. Gotta get and keep that V taper. If you get the pull bar and discover you can't do dead hang pull ups (not impossible, but unlikely at 135), you hang of the bar and do negative reps until you can. Lift, do other exercises, get your nutrition on point with that high protein, but at your weight it shouldn't take you long to start banging out sets of 10-12 pull ups at a time.

Once you have that down, you have your license to bulk, so long as you keep on the pull ups.

More protein and healthy fats, less carbs, full-body workouts three times a week. The Stronglifts 5x5 plan really is a good basic one to begin with. This will give you a baseline of fitness to work with and get your nutrition dialed in.

If you have any concerns about your posture or a sedentary lifestyle, kettlebell swings are also a great way to get your heart rate up and counter-act some of the impact of sitting, and adding a reverse fly to the end of your workouts may help strengthen your upper back to improve "text neck"/rolled shoulder.

Hidey-ho, RVFerinos!

I would take up grappling, mix martial arts, boxing, etc. You'll feel more masculine from the injection of testosterone. You want functional muscle instead of useless muscle. You don't want to be the office guy who works in IT who lifts just because he thinks women are attracted to muscles. He probably still comes across as a nerd..but with big arms. His identity is incongruent with his muscles. You want to be the guy with the lifestyle and identity that is conducive to being in shape like a crossfit guy, an MMA guy, a rock climber, an adventurer, outdoorsman, etc. This way you'll have fun, gain some passion, and get in shape as a side effect.
