Essentially all it means is that the US isn't going to try to create a new "moderate" rebel group because it obviously didn't turn out so well.
Now they will only "provide arms and equipment directly to rebel leaders and their units on the battlefield". So for example the $500 million dollars that we spent on training what ended up being "4 or 5 rebels" is now directly going to be turned into money and guns and handed out to whichever "moderate rebels" are already crawling all over the place.

I don't know, but I think Washington knows that the game is up in Syria. That's why I hope Putin sends in Russian ground troops. The effects of that policy seem to be to spite Assad and make sure that little flares of rebel resistance pop up from time to time, but the large scale operations will be over.

My take on it is that the US is now trying to counter-escalate, in order to neutralize Russia's involvement. So, things now just got a lot more interesting.

Despite my enthusiasm for Moscow's move, I wish it had come 2 years ago. And I hope that it is going to be sustained. Russia has a habit of being tight-fisted and niggardly when it comes to providing aid to its allies. Now is not the time for parsimony from Putin. Asad needs help, and a lot of it.

I wouldn't say the MSF hospital incident has been relegated to small captions. It has been pretty well covered, as it should. That is an extreme Intel failure at best. I may not care for MSF's current position regarding the migrants, but they by no means deserve to be shelled.

These days when I get to watch Russia Today, usually in hotels, I can't help but feel like an East German in DDR listening to free radio from Western Germany. The bs coming from mainstream western media is so thick now even ordinary people begin to question what the deal is.

Disagree (slightly). Even my French buddy said that there was no outrage in the French media and they didn't cover it too much. Whereas 20 years ago it would have been an outrage.

And it's not just "an extreme intel failure." (and come on, you could say that for just about any of the US and West's recent lame-ass interventions).

From what I understand, we were using local Afghan "allies" (who have ALWAYS been biased, corrupt, ethnocentric etc.) to tell us to repeatedly bomb the hospital - even despite us knowing it was a hospital after the first couple of attacks and having doubts. This after we'd just dealt with the same type of people who'd been molesting boys to the point where our soldiers said "enough" (even then it took a Fox News story to shame the US government into doing something to stop it).

Total failure across the board not just "intel."

I am no fan of Putin or Russia but the way they're dismantling Western influence on such a scale is making me question a lot of things these days.

Governments and political parties work the same way as big corporations. They exist to profit, and to make richer those in charge.
Corporations couldn't care less for their employees, and even much less for other smaller stakeholders, like the community for example.

Governments (in general) could not care less for their people, and much less for foreign nations people.

Everyone who has been to management board meetings knows how decisions are made. It is complete naivety to think that in politics things are done otherwise.

The article is good. And this is even short-cut version. It shows clearly how precise they are planning certain moves. Keep in mind that likely hundreds of thousands of pages of analytical papers by NGOs, military brass and secret services have been written behind the scenes.

Everything in our world of that caliber is deeply mulled over for years and even decades. It also shows that all forces in certain countries were working as one - various factions of Kurds, Iranians, Saudis, Israelis, US etc. - all deciding that Assad's Syria could not be "reformed" and they had to be toppled.

Damn - those leaders should finally read some real history by Carroll Quigley (Clinton's mentor at Georgetown) and just decide one of the ways they as a country and individually can come out best on top. The best solution for Assad is that he will be allied with Russia and China now.

That gives Turkey a great excuse against Russia since they were already upset at the intervention throwing a wrench in their attempts at bombing Kurds into extinction.

The US is may levy this to take pressure off of our Al Qaeda mercenaries brave freedom fighters. That's probably the best situation the corrupt defense committee chairpersons could've hope for. They may get a small window to reorganize of they play it right. Expect more demonizing, outright obfuscation and mention of inane claims like Russia's "human rights conduct" hitting the news cycles.

The "moderate" groups are allying themselves with al-nusra - alqhaida affiliate against the coming Government push.


I think the terrorists will loose, i can't see them holding of a ground invasion with this much russian air support. No matter what support they get from turkey/Saudiarabia/US, they are not a real army and they have no air support.
Putin will once again look like a master of diplomacy.
